    Hello all,

My M4800 came with WD7500BPKX as the main drive. I want to add Samsung SSD 860 EVO mSATA to the mSATA slot and use it as the main drive for windows.

    I have 3 qustions:
    - The mSATA drive performance will be as Sata3 ?
    - Can I have problems with such combination?
    - Can I migrate windows license from the WD to the new Samsung ?

    Thank you!

    1. This system supports SATA 3 for the mSATA drive.
    2. No problems. I don't recall if you have to do something in the BIOS to switch this slot between WWAN mode and mSATA mode because either type of card can work in the slot. I believe that we were able to install an mSATA drive without having to do any sort of configuration change.
    3. Even if it's a new drive, you do not have to worry about the Windows license because you are installing it in the same system. You can use a disk cloning tool like the Samsung Data Migration or Acronis True Image to clone your OS from your Western Digital drive to the SSD and after that it should boot up and run without any hassle. (Disable or remove your WD drive after cloning or the system might be confused about which one to boot... After one successful boot you can put the WD drive back in and wipe it for extra storage.)

GPU upgrades should work in any model.

Correct, Optimus only works with 1080p and below in this model.

I finally got new M4800 with IPS. The screen (B156HAN01.1) is awesome, the only disappointment is backlight bleeding (right side of the screen) and the strip at the bottom of the screen, that is darker, than other screen area.
I also changed thermal grease on both CPU and GPU, and fixed some thermal pads (they didn't cover some elements).

Do you know, where did Dell get these ultra soft thermal pads? They are very soft, I have tried to get good thermal pads, I tried out about 12 different thermal pads, but none of them was as soft and easily compressible, as Dell thermal pads.

Curious if you ever solved this issue. I purchased an M4800 recently that fortunately was still under Dell's business warranty since it would not boot on battery power alone (and like you, I wanted to keep it!). Turned out to be a motherboard problem.

    Hi everyone!

I just picked up a Precision M4800 on eBay for $200 USD to replace my Latitude E6540. The machine is in almost perfect condition cosmetically, however, it's slow as Hades! Under Windows 7 and Windows 10, it's basically unusable, with boot times of 5 min to get to the desktop. Uncompressing a 250mb zip file takes 13 min!

Under Linux, performance is better, however, boot time to desktop is 48s, whereas my E6540 would boot to desktop in 13s.

I've tried the following steps to trouble shoot the problem:

    Swapped the i5-4300m with a spare i5-4310
    Removed the Firepro 5100
    swapped the memory

None of these provided any better performance. Here are my system specs:

    Base Board Information
    Manufacturer: Dell Inc.
    Product Name: 0T3YTY
    Version: A00
    Serial Number: /B4LSXZ1/CN129634440194/
    Asset Tag: 0004571045

    2 x's Ramaxel RMT3170ME68F9F1600 4GB DDR3 1.35v

    DOGFISH SSD 128G mSata - Ubuntu 18.04

    SAMSUNG MZ7LN512 - Windows 10

    WD Blue WD10SPCX 1TB - data drive

Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem might be?

(EDIT) BTW, I'm using a Dell DA130PE1-00 power supply.

(EDIT 2), Well, as some of you might have guessed, the problem was my power supply. The laptop was shipped to me with a 130w psu that I thought was the original for the system. I swapped it for a 180w from my E6540 and it's performance has improved dramaticly. The same zip file decompressed in about 1:30.
