M4800 Owner's Thread

Almost every single BIOS (I don't see 10 and 12?) is available on the site I linked to - http://downloads.dell.com/published/pages/precision-m4800-workstation.html

 

Yes 10 and 12 are missing. I installed A11 but installing A09 fails, so maybe A10 would help but i cant find it anywhere.

 

Ah, gotcha. Well, that's a pain. I have 11, 13, 14, and 15 handy, but I guess that doesn't help...

 

I managed to get and install A10 but A09 is blocked. Maybe there on newer M4800 its not possible to go lower than A10...

 

Now that’s a real bummer.
There’s also a switch in BIOS to allow/disable BIOS downgrades. But I suppose you already must have that enabled?

 

If you have the eDP version of M4800, then it would kinda make sense. A10 brought a newer GOP (and video OROM) — BIOS video drivers, so to speak.

 

I tried "enable legacy UEFI ROM" option but no change. Cant find any other option.

BTW. On bios A10 fans are active more often and on higher speeds.

Maybe that is the problem...

 

One of the BIOS revisions (A10?) had a really bad bug in it, plus downgrading versions isn't really that recommended as there was a security vulnerability that was patched in the later revisions.

 

Under Maintenance, there is an explicit option to “allow BIOS downgrade”; though it’s likely a fairly recent addition—perhaps not yet present in A10.
(Otherwise, preferably do not allow anything “legacy” for clean UEFI operation—for Windows 8 and newer.)

If there is no way for you to get to your desired A6, then obviously it is not recommended to stay with A10 in particular, which was pulled after release. (On the other hand, I ran on it for eight months, until A14.)

 

I had "allow BIOS downgrade" option turned on. Looks its not possible to flash A06 so i went back to A16 and will have to use 180W power supply.
