No way I would buy the FHD version, but thanks for the heads up. I'm aware of the scaling issues and my Yoga2Pro has a high resolution display and I've adjusted the settings on it to where it doesn't bother me much. Photoshop CC2014 has what they call "experimental features" in the preference settings that allow you to adjust the interface text to about 200% and they have already worked on some of their other software. That works fine for my use. They were/are getting criticism for their previous versions - some warranted/some not. Some of the plugins I use are a bit hard to read, but I'm due for new glasses anyway. Other than some backlight bleed on my Yoga2Pro I love the display. I may ask them to replace that.

Thanks for the replies Perico and Alexhawker. I'm hoping that someone with the QHD screen that uses Photoshop and color calibration chimes in with their opinion (s)

Check near the beginning of the thread - IIRC, someone posted a color profile for their QHD screen - maybe you can Pm them and ask for opinions?

Really glad I found this forum and this topic - a lot of fellow M4800 users sharing their knowledge and experience! Fantastic!!!!

I got mine a month ago or so, and learned that one of my business-use CAD software (a very important one), doesn't like AMD graphics cards. It works, but it causes display bugs.
Rung up the company, and learned they only tested it on NVidia drivers and cards, specifically the Quadro cards. I should've went with my gut feeling and got the Nvidia Quadro K1100M instead.

Anyway - had several questions for fellow M4800 users:

    - I'm looking to get the Nvidia Quadro K1100M or Nvidia Quadro K2100M, I saw some people bought them off eBay, are they fully compatible? Any referrals or recommendations?
(I tried looking around local stores, nobody has them as stand-alone cards, only built-in into laptops)

    - If I do get the K1100M or K2100M, how difficult is to swap with the AMD card? Will I need any other accessories? (i.e. cables, etc.) or just a direct replacement?

    - Lastly, would anyone be interested in purchasing my AMD FirePro M5100? Or - would anyone buy it?

    Thanks in advance!!!

I’d suggest you go through the Owner’s Manual, see the steps described, ask yourself if you’d feel comfortable doing it.

While I might leave the rest to people with direct experience, from what I know, you should not need any cables. The card simply comes into the slot, which is standardised among several manufacturers using it.

However, you need to comfirm that your heatsink will fit another card, or you might need to get another heatsink. I’ve just gone through detailed part list for my setup, and my heatsink is identified specifically as for “PQ1”, but I’m not fully sure what this stands for, except that my Nvidia card is identified as N15P-Q1. Can you get a detailed part list based on your service tag? It’s more detailed than the usual config list (it even lists screws) and written rather in code than common descriptions—most lines begin with words like “service charge”, “information” etc. It appears to list everything that went into your unit. The GPU fan seems to be the same for all cards, btw; the line just states: “Fan, Video Graphics Adapter, 5V, M4800”. While the heatsink line for my setup states: “Assembly, Heatsink, Video Graphics Adapter, PQ1, M4800”. There’s the specifics.

And you will most likely need to repaste the GPU before fitting the heatsink.

Come to think of it, wouldn’t it be less of a hassle for you to sell (or return if possible) the machine and get another one with Nvidia?

Another idea: Talk to Dell, tell them of your problem. You haven’t had the machine for long, and your need is serious and work-related…
Convince them to send you a tech with parts to do the swap, maybe buying the parts from them if that’s an option, maybe convincing them to take back your FirePro. Whatever works. I say give it a try and talk to them first.

Another consideration to make: does the CAD software have any benchmark of its own? You probably know that K1100M isn’t very powerful and may be quite slower (if not buggy) than the FirePro you want to get rid of…

Wow! Thank you very much for the repsonses, M.J.S. !!

Re - installation, great! I'll keep that in mind, I'll look into the Owner's Manual.

Re - buy / sell, it might be quite a hassle for me to find a buyer for it and place another order, since I need to use the machine during this time.

Re - software benchmarks, its not so much the benchmarks and stats but the compatibility of the CAD software.
A lot of CAD / CAM software (esp. commercial / industry-grade ones) are apparently designed for NVidia because of NVidia's features, i.e. CUDA cores, etc......
They just cause driver bugs with AMD cards, which sucks!

Re - talking to Dell, i indeed did. I explained the situation to them and the conclusion was as follows:
    - they can send a technician on-site to help me replace the AMD card with an NVidia card (K1100M or K2100M), no charge, this is a special one-time offer
    - however, i'll need to buy the card separately, I inquired about buying the card from them....
    - but they said the K1100M is out-of-stock (they dont know when they're going to have it in-stock again), and the K2100M is insanely expensive
    - they will not take the AMD card back
I will try speaking with Dell again about this - the K2100M is crazy expensive and I only need K1100M just to work with my software and industrial machines.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. In the meantime, I'll continue to search for alternative solutions if the situation with Dell doesn't work out.

    Thanks!
