I hesitate to weigh in at all, I only have two M4800s to check, but I have the 4800MQ and a friend picked up one with the 4600M. He can only use two of the four ram slots, but they were all present. In order to answer this same question for him, I switched his 4600M for my 4800MQ, and suddenly he had all four slots working, and all four cores, eight threads. He ordered a 4800MQ and I put it in for him, he has no issues.

I do *not* know that this is the case for all M4800s, though. I think it is, but I can't say for sure, without having seen more machines.

That sounds like a definite maybe; which is better than the "No" I was expecting. Will probably buy a 4900MQ or 4930MX if someone else can confirm.

Having only 2 of the ram slots enabled for the dual core and all 4 enabled when the quad core was installed makes sense. It appears the same MB is being used on all m4800s now. Would be nice if someone else can confirm though.

Yeah, my limited experience showed one motherboard design on both. That might be an easy test, it's my understanding that any non-quad-ready motherboard will only have two of the four ram slots present.

As far as testing, a local computer store might have a quad core Haswell that they'll test for you, in your motherboard, for a small or nominal fee.

You could always look up the part number listed for your motherboard and compare it with one from a quadcore model - I'm pretty sure they will match. I'm not sure why they would have made two models before, but that kind of thing doesn't really make sense economically when you can sell a single board and just have it disable/enable ram slots based on the cpu.

I am counting on the rock factor  . All my laptops had issues suspending in linux, at least when closing the lid. Generally the least of ones problems running Linux. I've gotten used to mapping suspend to the power button. I had hoped the m4800 will be a little more lenient considering you can order it with red hat 6.4 or ubuntu 12.04, but as long as all the buttons work and the Intel 7260 works I'll be quite content.

Just put Ubuntu on mine, in order to learn, and sleep works for me. The problem I'm having is getting the screen back after the display is turned off for inactivity - I have to close the lid to get the machine asleep (despite the power options for what to do when plugged in), and wake it up to get the display back.

    Any suggestions?

    RAID0 with MSata

I thought to share my experience in making M4800 more Precise

Here is my result of installing two SSD drives, one of which is mSata and pairing them into RAID 0 Configuration to gain from 1000MB reading speed. below is result and my findings.

    Devices used:
Drive Model: LITEONIT LMT-256M6M-41 mSATA 256GB SED
    Drive Model: LITEONIT LCS-256M6S 2.5 7mm 256GB

Both have similar read/writes mSata actually has 50MB more in write section but its all academic.

RAID 0 Strip size 128 mSata with SATA SSD's.PNG

    Clean install W764

(strongly recommend to those who are in video editing) also make sure that latency is in check. heres the result. (if you do the same don't forget to install DELL power manager it has all the power profiles pre set)

    clean install m4800 DPC result.PNG

Solution to making dell paint stay where it should.

This is my idea how to protect the most "wear-off-able" parts of Dell typical "paint-off-quality" parts. It works great as this is Vinyl in its best, being very thin and yet sturdy so you can even stick it on touch-pad without rendering it unusable. (which is what I did). you also can easily remove it and brush of the glue which doesn't need detergent to be removed. so you have sexy and functional sticker that protects your Ms or Mr right ;)

word of warning you can stick and unstuck it while applying but once its been there for a bit glue changes form slightly so be prepared to get new sheet to patch up.

I done it once and its there. I love it as my hands rest and I'm not worried that paint or coloring of the wrist-pad will change!

Thumbs up if this helps to some of you who dread that paint is wearing off or staining or scratching.

you can buy these stickers on Ebay.

I really like my M4800 this is a multicam edit capable beast (hence need for 1000MB read capability for me)

I am assuming that many here have had the M4800 for awhile now and I need to finally make my laptop purchase decision next week, but .........

What about all the complaints in spiceworks forum of the M48000 freezing/locking up on Windows, with no solution, as some people there have had every component of the M4800 replaced, have tried either updating all drivers or rolling back certain drivers. They have even had their units replace with another M4800, only to experience the same freezing/locking up.
... Do you guys here experience this ?

... If not, what could be causing these other users on spiceworks to have such problems ?
... Will I be rolling the dice and gambling on the M4800 stability, If I purchase one ?

I am still waiting to receive my m4800 so I can't test it yet. But I can say that I have never experienced this particular problem on other system. You could try switching to a tty and then back to X via ctrl + alt + F1 and then ctrl + alt + F7. I suppose it could be an option to turn off the display sleep. Your best bet will probably be the ubuntu community forum.
