The optical drive can be removed and replaced with a drive caddy - I have a regular hard drive in there, so it doesn't matter if it's SATA II or III, but I thought it was III. Either way it sounds like the mSATA slot is definitely SATA III.

My mistake, was thinking about the bigger brother. Thanks for correcting me and thanks for the info - great news about the mSATA slots :) I had of course looked at the manual and never came across the discussion...

Just a heads up for everyone, it appears that custom configs for the M4800 are still available if you phone Dell up (or ask them to do a callback).

Hey scrlk, any luck with the QHD+ panel in custom configs?

    Thanks, Tom

Last night I had a chat with Dell UK customer service and the guy wrote that they no longer have QHD screen for M4800, and the bundle is the only config they offer at the moment. When I asked if the M4800 is being discontinued, he said no ;) I will try to contact Dell again in the coming days, but hopefully they will sort out their website soon, unless this is by design? Maybe there is a refresh imminent, a QHD screen with fully working Optimus would certainly make me happy, one can dream :)

I had a try last night (I'm in Belgium at the moment, so VPNed in and used the UK site and chose the chat online option). I asked why a QHD+ screen was described on the product page, but wasn't available. At first I was simply told:

"are you not aware that we have stopped the option to customize anything on the hardware config?" " they now come with standard config."

When I pressed that the site still very much describes it as an available option I was told:

"...we had the option available to customize but have stopped doing it as it was a business decision...[the screen] is optional, but we do not have that option available at the moment, it would be available shortly."

I feel sorry for the chat agrents - they don't seem to be well informed by Dell and don't realise what has been available. The information provided to them should be much better. Having said all this, I'm moving closer and closer to going for the Mac Book Pro.

It seems like I was wrong re: custom M4800 configs. I clarified with the sales agent this morning that previous standard models were still available (e.g. i7 4800MQ, M5100 Firepro, 8GB RAM, 500GB hybrid drive, 1920x1080 etc) but custom configs are not available at all.

I guess I can wait another month or two for a laptop that would be perfect for my needs, providing that my current machine will not fail in the meantime, but I am simply tired and bored of researching, refreshing pages and being fed with conflicting messages.
