The IPS display has a wider color range as well as a wider viewing angle. The 15" version seems to have issues with corner tint (HP's machines have this issue too because they use the same display). For now it seems that Dell has stopped selling it.

IMO if you are in to graphics or video you may appreciate the better color of the IPS display, and you should look into it; if that's not your area then the regular screen is fine.

Thanks for reply, I guess it no longer matters (the IPS option), because on the current M4700 on-line purchase config page they only have two options, that is the so-called "Premium Panel Guarantee" 1920x1080 and a lower res display. I am more concerned about the frame rate and the display's response time than anything else in terms of Display-GPU combination. I am not going to do CAD or that type of rendering, neither I am a big time gamer. But what I am really looking for in terms of Display-GPU is fluid high-res movies playing. Although the main use of a new machine will be for SW and DB development.

Given what I've learned so far I still cannot decide between DELL's M4700 and Lenovo's W530.
What kinda sways me into the Lenovo direction is the significant price difference for almost identical system configuration.
Also Lenovo's people seem to be more flexible in terms of giving you some extra and freebies when you system's config goes over $2Gs.
I am not sure about DELL's sales, but from my little experience dealing with those guys from India, they don't seem to care if you're gonna buy or not, and don't seem to be as flexible as Lenovo's sales (nothing personal and no hard feelings at all for Indians, just facts of my communication with them, my subjective opinion).

BTW I've been using DELL's laptops and desktops/servers for almost 20 years, and it wouldn't be an easy decision for me to switch for Lenovo (or God forbid for HP), but I keep hearing a lot good-to-excellent feedback and reviews from Lenovo users around me. Besides both DELL's and Lenovo's displays, as I learned from some GPU forum, are both manufactured by LG and thus practically identical.

Anything available today, even the Intel IGP can run 1080p content fluidly.

    Just throwing out there:

Not sure how you got connected to the Indians. I've placed a number of orders from Dell Small Business over the past few months. Whenever I call the main business sales number and get connected with a U.S. citizen who speaks perfectly understandable English. :) I've always had a perfectly reasonable experience.

Respectfully disagree. My friend's Acer doesn't show blacks correctly at all (anything darker than dark gray looks like a dark moving shapeless something) and gets terribly jittery when fast moving objects displayed and that is not an entry level machine.

Yes, they have removed it. It was present at the launch of the 4700 and seems to have been removed during October. I know, because it was there when I configured my machine in August; I sent the config to ourIT guys and by the time they it was available to our buying group and they tried to order it in November, the IPS option was not available (Dell sent a machine with the TN display, which is awful, and is going back).

Being part of a big buying group, Dell tends to be nice to us so I tried to get them to find one of the now-withdrawn panels and specially configure me a machine with it. No dice. And by the way, if this had been possible, it would need a whole new base unit not just a drop-in screen replacement.

I will now be getting an M6700 because the wide-gamut IPS screen is a requirement so I have to suck up the size and weight.

Could anybody explain to me please the difference between the Internal English Backlit Dual Pointing Keyboard for Windows® 8 (which is $12.92) and the Internal English Backlit Keyboard (which is $33.32) ?
Isn't the keyboard with the "dual pointing" option supposed to cost more ?
Is there any hidden catch here?

The Windows 8 keyboard has the new Windows logo on the Windows key. :p
Not sure why there's such a big price difference.

"TN display" - do you mean the currently available Ultra-sharp 1920x1080 display for 4700 ?
Or the entry-level one, which is 1366x768 ?

P.S. I am sorry, I am getting lost here.
The displays they have currently listed on their on-line purchase config page are 1366x768 and US FD 1920x1080.
Which one of those is TN? I know it kinda looks like a retard's question, but I am trying hard not to make a mistake that cannot be reversed later in terms of my system configuration, so I'd better look stupid than do a stupid mistake because of my lack of knowledge here.

Or should I altogether forget M4700 and go for M6700 because of the M4700's display problems that I read about all over the Internet?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
