    Hi All,

    I am contemplating between M4600, M4700 and W520 (don't like the new keyboard on W530). A have a few questions regarding Precision LCD options:

    1) IPS vs a standard Dell 1920x1080. Is there a huge difference worth $270?

    2) Dell standard LED-backlit 1920x1080 vs Lenovo W520 1920x1080 - which one is better?

    Also, I was reading somewhere that IPS screens have some compatibility issues with the Intel 7 second generation video cards, i.e. only NVIDIA can be used. Can someone shed light on this?

    Thanks!

    1) yes. the IPS is a 10-bit 100% NTSC -> over a billion colors. The standard 1080p is a 6-bit panel with 72% gamut.
    2) Lenovo is way better - 95% gamut vs 72%. Here's the trick, you can buy a 95% gamut panel separately and install in the M4x00 ;)

    Yes, Dell is a tricky one. It looks as the standard screen is not even 72% gamut but only 60% - have a look here.

    Oh? Which panel is a direct drop in fit? Sorry if this is a dumb question :)

    Regarding the non-IPS Dell monitor, how well does it compare to a regular Ultra Sharp LCD Monitor? I do mostly coding so I don't need 100% color gamut but I still appreciate great colors!

    Also, my current UltraSharp monitor has CCFL backlighting, how much better/worst is WLED backlighting for color accuracy?

    The IPS screens use 10 bits per color and thus require a GPU that supports 10 bits per color channel output. The Intel GPU only supports 8 bits per color channel. So, when you have an IPS panel, you'll have to be using the discrete GPU all of the time.

    I strongly recommend the IPS screen. I had both - first the full HD 1080px Ultrasharp Prmium - great screen from AOU, then the the IPS. I am now using the IPS and I will never go back to TN. Hence my advice. Thanks

    How (where from) one can get an IPS display. I am looking at the M4700 customization page and I do not see such an option. Have DELL removed that IPS option? Or you were referring to an aftermarket display upgrade for M4700? That is really confusing, DELL change UI layout/ available options by hour, ughh:mad:

    I am trying to decide which way to go - either Lenovo W530 or DELL M4700. So far W530 wins in terms of price for a similar config, but looses in nterms of interfaces/connections and raid controller missing for a default config (4 weeks wait time for raid controller enabled mobo configs), if i am not mistaken M4700's mobo has raid controller installsd by default.

    The IPS in the M4700 had tint issues and was removed from the configurator for that reason. If you want a 15" with an IPS display, the Elitebook 8570w is pretty much your only choice.

    Could you please educate me a bit? Because I guess I am not all that educated in "display terminology", meaning I do not know what the difference is between Ultra-Sharp and IPS DELL's display, if there's any. Also if you happen to know difference between DELL's and Lenovo's displays (some forums say they are from LG, that is DELL's and Lenovo's), could you please enlighten me? I would greatly appreciate that, thanks in advance
