M4700 Owners Thread

Hi,
I have a dell M4700 with both Mobile 3G and WiFi. When I'm moblie and using my 3G connection I sometimes pick a WiFi network that I used at sometime before (in this case Telia Homerun, this provider offer WiFi service on Airports and Hotels). So even though I don't want to use that WiFi network my computer automaticly connect to it. No matter that I disconnet or if I go into the network properties and uncheck the "automatically connect" option, my computer connect again after a few seconds.

Since I don't have login credentials to this network I cannot surf, the WiFi is blocking my 3G.

The only workaround I have seen is to disable my WiFi completely, but its not how it is supposed to worlk.

Anyone have the same experience?

Anyone have a clue on how to fix it?

Does your approach work with multiple monitors connected?

I just moved from an apartment with a fair bit of ambient noise to one that is quite quiet and now the M4700 seems to have roared to life again (with the fan cycling), very annoying.

Have 2 monitors connected, one via HDMI, the other via DVI.

Machine is more or less perfect otherwise, 57 celcius fan trigger point be damned! arggghhhh ;-)

 

For those who took the system apart to upgrade the CPU/GPU, is it as easy as the owner's manual shows? (basically something like remove battery > base cover > keyboard > keyboard trim > some sort of cover > heatsink)

Found a pretty good deal on a M4700, FHD screen, FirePro M4000 but comes with dual core i5-3340M, so I'm considering on getting it and upgrade the CPU.

 

Still having the fan issue with m4700 (Current Power Setting=Cool). Decided to use my port replicator with both DVI's and VGA hooked to two monitors. One monitor has DVI and VGA, other just has DVI ( like to try this with other connection types but don't have any other cables. Within "Set up multiple displays" in the nvidia control panel all three show up even though two are the same. The two DVI seem to default to the Quadro but the VGA grabs the Intel4000. with this config I'm still getting the fan cycling, but when the monitor that has both connections is unchecked in the DVI setting under Quadro and just uses the Intel4000, the cycling stopped and it's been hovering between 39°c and 47°c according to GPU-Z.
Hope it holds, seems to be.

 

Whenever a monitor hooks up on quadro card (via dvi in your case) it wakes up gpu from sort of sleep state which couses it to produce heat. Heat slowly builds up and that causes extra heat on quadro card and makes fan turn on. If you use only vga and laptop monitor only hd4000 is used which is integrated into cpu and cpu fan keeps it cool and rotates at more or less steady speed cooling both cpu and hd4000. I only wish dell integrated any form of fan controll into precision line so we could set gpu fan to its lowest setting and thus keeping machine cool enough for fan not changing gears and making irritating noise while using extra monitors.

Anyone else having issues with the latest Windows 8.1 update? My OS self destructed, would hang at the diagnosing your system screen. I formatted and reloaded 8.1 from scratch, it seemed good and then after a reboot a few hours ago it hung and system restored to yesterday before I reinstalled drivers and office. Not sure if I'm dealing with bad hardware or some driver issue in the new Microsoft patches...

 

Seems the only way out of multi-monitor GPU fan cycling hell is to get into the "secret" BIOS, which pre-M4700/M6700 was done via:

holding down Fn + Shift + the numbers 1 5 3 2 4 (in succession) and then doing Fn + r to get to the engineers-only BIOS which contains thermal override options (e.g. at what temps to trigger fans to go on/off, or even disable BIOS control of the fans entirely and use a software only fan solution like i8k, speedfan, etc.).

I have had no luck unfortunately on my M4700 ;-(

Can fellow M4700 users give the above steps a shot and see if you can get engineer mode to show up? Not saying to change any settings, just trying to see if Dell disabled this means of access for newer Precisions (presumably so given that you can just google, "dell secret bios 15324", and voila, the steps to fan Nirvana).

quick google pull this up Dell Precision M6600 - Fan Control Support, so 6500 definitely work,one say 6600 work,
but can't pull it up on mine
