I'm thinking about buying a M4400 with WUXGA 2CCFL screen.

I'm a web developer, so I need "space" on the screen for running programs as Eclipse, etc... However I'm a bit worried for if the fonts (reading text, typing code...) are very small.

I read that the Vista DPI scaling engine is really good and can solve this issue.

Could anyone attach some screen captures with 96 dpi (default) and 120 dpi, using Vista DPI scaling?

This screen is really nice? Any programmer use it?

Thank you and sorry for mi English (I'm from Spain).

I had exactly the same thoughts before I bought my M4400 with WUXGA RGBLED. I also thought that if the text was too small I could still use Vistas dpi scaling, hoping that it wouldn't look ugly. I had an Eee-PC back then, and, surprisingly, although the text is even a bit smaller on the M4400 than it is on an Eee-PC 901, it definitely much easier to read because the screen is of a higher quality. I am very happy I chose this screen. It makes me wonder how I've been able to use Eclipse with lower resolutions :)

So I'll just attach screenshots with 96 dpi for now, please tell me if you still need 120 dpi shots :)

Hi Christoph! Thank you very much for your opinion and your shots.

Anyway, could you attach more screenshots with desktop and some programs running (as firefox....), and Eclipse screenshots with 96 dpi and 120 dpi? I want to see how Vista DPI scaling works.

    Thank you a lot!!! :)

see how firefox zooms...its very clear. you can use the touchpad for on the fly zooming, most apps support it, msn, firefox, IE (although i dont like the way it zooms) also office apps of course

Note that for firefox the zooming appears to be tab by tab and must be redone when a tab is opened. Very annoying and only partly relieved by setting the minimum font size under tools-> options-> content-> advanced-> minimum font size. Setting the font size doesn't change the size of other content though.

Did I miss something that would set the default zoom level in firefox?

I'm not sure if we are talking about the exactly same thing, but there is an advanced option in firefox to tell it whether it should save the zoom level on a site-per-site basis only. To access it, open a new tab and enter "about:config" into the address bar. Pass the sanity check, search for "browser.zoom.siteSpecific" and double-click it to set it from "true" to "false". Restart firefox.

i prefer doing it on a site by site basis.

this is because some pages need less zoom than others

Dpi scaling has indeed been improved in Vista, however it's not perfect. If it's very important for you, it may be better for you to wait for Windows 7, where the scaling will be improved over Vistas. For comparison shots of various dpi settings in Vista and Windows seven, see http://www.istartedsomething.com/20061211/vista-dpi-scaling/ and http://www.istartedsomething.com/20081029/windows-7-dpi-scaling-my-7-is-bigger-than-your-7/

My advise is to buy the WUXGA screen and return it if you don't like it. The chance is high that you will like the screen.

Ideally I'd like Firefox to use the same zoom setting for all tabs and to remember this setting between sessions. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work this way. Firefox isn't remembering any settings and with siteSpecific value to false every tab is set separately and starts off with no zoom. With sitespecific set to true then all tabs with the same site zoom in unison but other sites start off un-zoomed.

Don't see any other parameters that sound promising......no wait ---> browser.zoom.full = false seems to cause it to save the zoom settings between sessions. Closer to what I'm after. Thanks -- I forgot all about the config options.
