    How about posting a picture?
    So the heatsink has something else taking up the gap between the memory chips and heatsink? or just thermal paste filling a 2-3mm gap?:eek:

    Well the pads aren't solid at all and it's very thin, at last 1mm, you don't need to fill any gap! The pads actually look like a pad out of paste :eek:

    The pad melts when the chips gets warm (that's the way it looked), that caused a very uneven paste application. One side of the cpu was covered with a lot of paste, the other side there was hardly any paste. I didn't take photos before I cleaned the heatsink, and now it looks exactly like the pics you see in this thread. I used MX-2 high performance thermal compound (they claim it's even 2°C better than arctiv silver 5) but I think the improvement is mainly due to better application of the paste.

    i havent opened mine up yet, but mines a fairly early m4400...i bought it in late september. Is that considered an older one with the pads?

    and are you sure yours was a pad? it might have just been someone putting a sloppy chunk of paste on...

    how do you remove it if its a sticker? can you use normal removal solutions that are used for paste?

    You can scrap it off just like paste. It's not a real sticker or pad, its looks just like a pad. Unfortunately I didn't take photos... perhaps someone else can, when he opens his M4400..

    My pads on the video memory chips are 1.8mm thick and you can see the two nearest barely even touch.

    That is way too much to try and fill with thermal paste,especially when its well known that thermal paste has an insulating effect if too much is used.

    I advise anybody who has a version like mine,not to take the pads off,unless you are going to replace most of the gap with very carefully measured copper sheet.

    intoxicate,your cpu die had a wax pad,but your video memory chips didn't :confused:

    Mine looks very similar to yours. The memory chips have the wax pads, the cpu and gpu die had somekind of paste pads... feels and removed like paste, but looked to perfect to be applied by hand, it more looked like a preformed sticker.

    @all

    How does the application of AS5 affect the notebook fan? Does the fan kick in less on say average use (web browsing, watching dvd)?

    Hi ernst...my fan never kicks in when i'm not stressing the laptop actually. Not before i applied AS5 or after i did. Maybe only with the laptop in bed watching a movie and the vents were blocked but otherwise no.
