    On my old Dell, a few websites offered modified DVD-RW drive firmwares that would control read/write speed for different media. The firmware would limit the speed of a DVD to 1x so it wouldn't spin up and spin down during a movie, or you could get one that would force it to run at the maximum speed if your player buffered. I'm not sure what the driver are in these laptops, but you might look around the net and see what you can find.
