I've noticed that Dell now lists "Latitude ON" as a feature in the product description for E4200. However when you select the E4200 it only lists "Latitude ON Reader" as previously.

"Enjoy instant access to email, calendar and internet with the new Dell Latitude ONTM communication module. Dell Latitude ON enables bi-directional remote access to your Microsoft Exchange data with the single touch of a button without booting or waking your entire laptop—lowering power consumption and extending battery life. "

So something "new" but it is not available yet....

I am probably a little late to this discussion but Latitude ON is a embedded Linux distribution on a chip that goes next to the wireless card in the e4300.

Most of what is being sold right now ar ON Ready systems. They will not have the chip in them. This is at least for the United States..
It is really designed for web browsing, e-mail and other tasks of that nature. It will have firefox, evolution,a Calendar and organizational apps. It was made so you could check e-mail and other business oriented tasks quickly.

My question is how would you configure the distro unless it is reading something off the HHD? Also, what happens to the work you did? WOuld it erase the e-mails unless they were sent? You would have to have Exchange or other client set to hold your messages and not delete them when you download them to Outlook or another program.

SOunds handy but don't know if it would be that useful. Too many things to go wrong.

To my understanding it will have its own internal storage and will not use the HDD.
So yes, you might be dependent on services in "the cloud" to ensure that things like a draft mail "survive".
The internal drive could store some things like the Linux distro, config files and to some extent data as well.
I think the user guide that is linked in a post in this thread will help you understand some more.

Any news on the lat ON modules. My dell E4200 has the Lat on Socket but it's empty. The latON reader is worthless.

I noticed that dell.com now lists Latitude ON as an option available for $199 in the US.

Should be an option now that the Latitude Z is out. Guess we need to wait until someone purchases the new Z or E/M w/ Latitude ON.
