Anyone try to put a E7450 keyboard into a E7440? I just got a E5450 today and they keyboard on it is much better than the E7440.

No chance! If you look in the E5450 owners manual (page 14) then you will see that underneath the trim between the keys are screws that hold down the keyboard itself. This improved fixing is probably what makes the keyboard feel better (I notice the same on my E7450) but means that it is not backwards compatible with the previous Latitudes where the keyboard is just fixed around the edges.

Yeah, I figured the chances were small, but it never hurts to ask. I wish Dell would come out with a better keyboard, but nobody puts money into old models. It's my one real complaint about the E7440 in what is a very nice notebook otherwise. Thanks John.

Then it's time to start looking out for a good deal on the E7450 after which you can rehome the E7440.

As always, the perfect choice remains elusive. If I go with the E7450, I have to give up the mSATA slot and my 1TB hard drive. If I were to get a new notebook, I'd probably opt for the T450s, but those rarely show up in the outlet or go on sale. Also, being that I don't use my notebook too often, I'm not sure I want to spend the money. $20-30 for a keyboard was more palatable.

Killed my SD card reader. Reverted (scary stuff, but all well) to A15 , card reader is back.

Thank you so much for this, now I am more confident in buying an E7440. However, I still hope I can avoid switching to Windows 8... From the first article you linked, it seems that the DIPM fix should have the same effect in Win 7 and reduce idle core temp. significantly, possibly enough to stop the fan from spinning during light load. Maybe you tried that, or do you think it will?

Is there a way to put in an e7440 keyboard with trackpoint nub on my e7240? Love my e7240 but I really miss the trackpoint and 3 buttons on my x61t. Probably own 20+ laptops and the one I use the most is my 7 year old x61t sxga+.

Not really a fan of the e7250

Some places such as this are listing it as the same keyboard for both models. However, I don't think there is room on the 7240 for the buttons between keyboard and touchpad and it would be a stretch to operate both the pointing stick and the buttons with one hand.
