Should have listened to the 5%. My E7440 definitely has the mSATA slot. I swapped over the mSATA SSD and it booted right up. Is there a recommended procedure for setting up the BIOS? I just hit reset in the BIOS and that seemed to flip it over to legacy mode, but I'm not sure if I should check to if I messed anything up in doing so. Windows 7 installed and booted normally after hitting reset.

How do I check to see if I have the backlight connector for the keyboard?

I did find something interesting that I didn't notice right away, but there seems to be a gap on the left side between the LCD and the LCD housing:

Anyone else see this and would a call to Dell support be warranted? I'm not sure how bad it could be if I didn't notice it for a few days. Thanks for any help.

Keyboard connectors are actually on palmrest. You can check if you got backlight connector under the battery - peel off the plastic sheet.

Photo is kind of blurry - but it seems like isolation tape that's on the edges of the lcd panel.

Your unit is from outlet? It might not be covered.

But you can easily disassemble the bezel to fix it.

See the user manual: ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-prod...tude-e7440-ultrabook_Owner's Manual_en-us.pdf
Item [1] on the picture on page 18 of the pdf is the backlit cable and its connector on the mobo. As long as the connector is there you should be ok.
I don't know what the gap is, but on my e7440, I noticed that the display bezel was raised on the left lower corner compared with the right side. It's a plastic piece held in place by small plastic tabs and it's very easy to remove it using a prying tool or credit card. I did that and noticed that the wireless antenna was not routed properly and it was trapped between parts under the bezel. I just moved it a few mm around and then re-installed the bezel and it was nice and flush. May be you want to try removing the bezel from there and see if there is something trapped underneath?

Connectors are on the palmrest (touchpad board), not mobo :)

Read the reviews and comments on E7240 and E7440. I am about to order a new work laptop. Not able to decide if I should go with E7240 or E7440. Mine will be no touchscreen, i7 and with 256 SSD config. My work involves some travel, but not a whole lot (once a month). I love to have less weight as I will using for daily use as well. Not sure how much I will be loosing on the screen size by choosing E7240 and would that 0.5lb gain worth it (or how small the fonts will be in 12.5 for to have the same content as in 14 inch as I see both the screen has same res)

No wonder either choice will be good, but whats that edge. Any pointers or thoughts or experience would help me decide on this 12.5" or 14" beautiful beast.

    Thanks

The E7440 can also take a 2.5" HDD if you think you will need more storage space. It may also run a bit cooler due to the larger footprint compared to the E7240.

Thanks. Didn't think abt heat. I am leaning more towards E7440 than E7240 for the extra display size. Its just that... I think 12.5 inch form factor and 0.5lb reduction may be more practical and handy....
    arrrghh too close...

Opt for the FHD IPS version of the E7440 - then it's a simple choice, because it's matte display.

E7240 with FHD is only available as touch system.

I have a non-touch FHD e7440 and my wife has a touch e7240. Dell initially sent her a non-FHD one by mistake, and all I can advise you is that by all means avoid getting an e7240 (and most likely e7440) with low resolution screen. It is horrible. I could compare all three (e7440 non-touch FHD, e7240 touch FHD and e7240 non-touch HD) next to each other and even not considering the low resolution, the colors were dull and off and the viewing angle was very limited in the non-FHD screen.
Size- and weight-wise both laptops look very close. Keyboards are exactly the same (except for the missing pointer in the middle of the keyboard of e7240) so are the touchpad and the mouse bottoms. Obviously the palm rest is a big bigger on e7440. The internals also look similar. e7440 has the 2.5" bay plus an mSATA slot, but the e7240 has two mSATA slots, so as long as you don't want to use mechanical HDDs, both should offer good expansion potentials.
I only buy from outlet and never seen an e7240 with non-touch FHD, so not sure if they even offer them, just be careful not to get the ones with non-FHD screen!

Thanks for sharing the HD and FHD part. Didn't notice that.
Unfortunately, my companies laptop ordering portal doesn't have a FHD IPS option. Just HD for 12.5 and 14" or FHD with touch for 12.5 and 14.4
Too bad I cannot get FHD IPS 14". If I want I can take FHD with touch on both, hopefully not without raising any eyebrown in the management chain, but really hate the touch screens.

So my Options are [all with i7, SSD]
    1. E7240, HD (1366x768) approx 3lb
    2. E7440 HD approx 4lb
    3. E7240 FHD with touch approx 4lb
    4. E7440 FHD with touch approx 4.5lb

I will having it hooked to two 23" external monitor for the most part
Dang it...wish I have the FHD IPS option on the 14", wait...then it would be a no brainer. Looks like I have to accept touch screen and try pushing E7240 FHD with touch on the budget.
Couldn't believe 1366x768 is bad on a 12.5 screen. I tried to see video, all of them compare the movie or games, I am going to use for just document and office sites on the go and mainly thru external monitors (FHD)
