So I managed to get an e7240 1080p, i7-4600u, 8 gb ram, 256 ssd, 4-cell for $995 after taxes off Dell but anyone else having problems with the creaky/loose battery and creaky hinges? It really bothered me so I returned it. It also ran hot. Not as hot as my old laptop but still pretty hot. Bought same spec e7440 so hopefully it's better. Otherwise I'll just return it. I have an e6220 at the moment, but would like an ssd and IPS screen.

please update on your e7440. I had none of those problems with my e7240 except it's a bit warm. Otherwise I love it but I would like an option for a 2.5 bay, pointing stick and a middle button which the e7440 has.

Anyone know when the e7440 is due for replacement?
I'm looking at getting something at the moment, the e7440 fits the bill nicely, but it's a year old already? I'm not sure how often Dell do refreshes on them?

Is anyone using E7440 with Intel S3700 SSD and with password protection on the disk?

It seems like this laptop sees passwords on other drives fine, but with the S3700 it doesn't see the drive.

Yet, my previous E6410 and E6510 see the same SSD just fine and ask for the password.

Already tried multiple combinations of UEFI/Legacy boot, disabling HDD0, AHCI vs RAIDon mode. Same problem.

Tried flashing to A05 / A07 and A08 bioses, same issue. Seems like A07 release notes mention there was an
issue with SSD drive security which was fixed. What seems odd is that E6410/E6510 came out 4 years ago and
    have absolutely zero issues.

Really need the feature of hard drive password to work since that's how I make sure that if the laptop gets
stolen, noone has access to my data.

Laptops showed up yesterday. Much to my dismay no lighted keyboard. My bad apparently as I didn't realize they were an option on the E7440, thought they were standard (my 6430u's have backlit keyboards and they are a must for me). I'm going to call Dell this morning and see what my options are and what they might do. I'm presuming they can be replaced - I see some on eBay from China for 25 bucks. The prices for my same laptop now on Outlet are $300 to $400 more than I paid so returning them and getting another doesn't sound feasible. Maybe the outlet guys will be nice and upgrade them for me. :) Anyone else had this issue?

OK been on with Dell for over an hour and talked to four people. They said these two laptops should have had backlit keyboard and I should talk to Pro Support. I do that and he is all set to send me backlit keyboards but say uh oh - a new motherboard would be required so they can't do that. Off to customer service I go who offers a full refund with shipping labels. That's all great except that now the equivelant laptop with backlighting is $300 to $400 more each. Hmmmmmmmmmmm. My 6430u's are fine right now and I'm ok with waiting a little bit but will the price drop down again for what I paid anytime soon or I live w/o backlighting....

My understanding is that the backlit keyboard is an option, not standard. The detailed configuration information for my machine (both on the website before I purchased and on confirming emails after purchase) said:

Internal English Backlit Dual Pointing Keyboard

If the documentation or emails you received from Dell read like this, they indeed sold you machines that were supposed to have backlit keyboard and they should be doing whatever it takes to remedy this at no cost to you, including a motherboard replacement. If your configuration information doesn't read this way, your units weren't supposed to have the backlit keyboard option and you don't really have recourse. In that case I'd take the refund if you really want the backlit kb. There will be other sales.
