Good question. I am not entirely sure. I want to use the laptop as a measurement platform for speakers. So I will have to connect a measurement microphone from a mic preamp to take signals into the soundcard so the software can analyze the frequency while the sound card will have to generate testing tones. People have suggested buying an external soundcard but some saying if your laptop soundcard is full duplex, you can do it just calibrate it with the software.

Perhaps the 'software' support people could better comment on sound device requirements. The most Dell says in the online manual for the E6410 is that it is 2-channel HD.

    New Owner: About Display

Hey Forum, Today I became a fellow E6510 owner with the below specs.

    Win 7 64b Pro.
    i5 540M
    4 GB Ram
    250 GB HD
    1366X768 HD Screen
    Intel HD Graphics

The machine is very good and solid however when I switch on or reboot the computer, right before booting into win 7 a very faint white vertical line appears on the far left side near the edge of the screen. After booting into OS everything is fine, no line nothing.

Could this behavior be considered as hardware/driver initialization, is it cause of concern?

Looks like Dell finally added an updated display driver for the 3100M ... wonder if hibernation and/or Displayport audio works with it.

Being on the edge, it could be some sort of initialization bleed affect of no consequence and perhaps not worth resolving if it means replacing otherwise good hardware. Considering owning it unless it becomes unbearable.

It happens during booting only and after OS takes control everything is smooth, no issues at all.

I ran all the diagnostics and everything checked out fine, no problems found there.

Maybe it will precede a display failure later on. But that could be eclipsed by some other fault. So, consider holding as is in view of your warranty period.

Today my system went very unresponsive and then system died. I tried to restart, recover, nothing works. It won't boot. I called Dell and they asked me to do a system pre-boot test (FN + Power). It said "Hard drive error - 0510".

Does that mean hard drive is dead? It's only a month old Latitude. They will send a replacement hard drive. But my worries is how can I try to save the data? :(

Dell's response to error 0510 suggests the HDD is failed. Hardware failures tend to come early or late.

If the HDD is not readable in a working system, then your data may be considered inaccessible. There are salvage services but that's expensive.

If the HDD will not boot the OS, then you could try connecting it as a second drive in a working desktop with a spare SATA connector. Then maybe that system will see the failing drive well enough for you to drag your data off of it. Worth trying as some failing drives come to life intermittantly.

I would try reseating the drive in your laptop. Also see if you laptop will boot from a bootable OS disc in the DVD drive to prove the system and storage controller are working... just not the HDD.

I just replace my spare hard drive into the laptop. The pre-boot system test went through. I put the harddrive in a external enclosure and connect it to my desktop. I only saw a "Recovery" partition (749MB). Is there anyway I can save the data? :( I kind of know the answer.

When I close my ear to it, I heard the motor is struggling. And the external enclosure LED is "red" (Should be "green").
