    Hello!

I just purchased an E6400 which will be arriving next week, and I have a question: I have an old 2GB DDR2 PC2-5300 RAM module I've salvaged from my old computer. According to crucial.com, the E6400 uses DDR2 PC2-6400 memory. Can I use it in the E6400 memory slot, and if so, what kind of a performance hit, if any, will happen?

    Thanks!

    ----

EDIT: The E6400 has 1x2GB RAM module in it preinstalled, and the OS is 32-bit Vista.

The PC5300RAM should work together with one of the PC6400 modules. The BIOS will check both modules and use the fastest speed that is supported by both.

There will be a very slight performance hit but you can only detect it using benchmark programs.

Based on my personal experience in upgrading and building systems.
It is critical that the memory speed and memory timing matches, (even same brand of chips used on the memory) else you increase the chances of decreasing significantly your system stability.

If you enjoy a stable system, I strongly suggest matching memory in all aspects.

then if will run at 5300 and the remaining from the 6400 will be wasted since it will downclock to 5300

i suggest you get the same speed, which is 6400

I do not expect any problems: I ran my E6400 with mixed RAM for a few months until I bought a PC6400 2GB module.

For the past 8 months I have been running with a 2GB OCZ PC6400 module and a 2GB unbranded PC6400 module and have had zero problems. From my experience matching of RAM is not necessary.

Does anyone have experience with using mail-in warranty for latitudes. I don't want to spend extra for the NBD onsite.

I have been using HP Business laptops for the last 3-4 years and am pretty impressed. For harddrive, keyboard, etc they usualy overnight parts to me for self-install. For heavier things they overnight a prepaid shipping label and a box which i use to send my laptop in. I have been getting it back within 2-3 days.

What differences should i expect from Dell's mail-in warranty?

Next Buisness On site service, is what I believe worth every penny:
    - Your laptop is fixed in-front of you, therefor you can ensure that the job is done correctly and that the issue is resolved. Also ensuring that no other issues arises.
    - Your laptop is fixed the next business day.. no wait.. no shipping problem... no delays.. no going to the trouble to ship it
    - The sub contracted firm by Dell technician comes at your place, day (business day) at the time you want (at a reasonable level.. he won't come at 2 am, if you get what I mean)
    - If a laptop replacement (it's a new build if your system is not form the outlet, but rather new) is required, you get to keep your system until you get the new one, and are free to switch HDD between systems (if that is not the issue) so that you avoid a re-install and continue your day like if you had no problem.

When you order your system, I suggest to call Dell, as they might be nice and remove any shipping costs, or even include Next Buisness Day service for free with your system.

1- Ensure that your keyboard is set to English U.S within Windows.
2- When numLock is turned off, your numpad is turned on, meaning the keys with number at the center will be numbers instead of letters.
3- All the top arrow number should work.

If within Windows everything is fine, then contact Dell for a new keyboard.
