I have the i7-6820HQ with the dgpu and don't have the whine. One difference on my machine is that I have the model with the Thunderbolt3 (USB-C) port. I don't know if that makes any difference.

i've recently updated to windows 10 but it didn't make much of a difference with the heating problem.
i checked the power adapter and there's also a strong buzzing noise from there. (currently there's a gentle coil whine when on battery mode, that gets stronger when connected to ac).

update: after some research - it's common in dell's laptop (xps series). sending mine back hopefully.

only question is if it's possible that the faulty adapter with coil whine could have damaged the laptop?

The PSUs contain transformers and capacitors which, like the coils and capacitors on the mainboard, can vibrate when their power states change. However, this isn't going to directly affect the computer.

There is also the possible consideration that young ears are much more sensitive to high frequency noise than old ears. So it may be that my computers and PSUs are making undesirable high frequency noises which I can't hear.

big thank you and thank you guys for all your help.
this laptop is otherwise great (the keyboard is perfect for fast touch typing).

it would be nice to know if the model with i5-6200u is free from the coil whine and overheating problem, since it is using lower voltage. i asked around and i guess that the chances are better.
i understand why most people that spent 1.5K on a machine would go crazy from that. I'm glad that i bought it from a big store with good returns policy.
one thing for sure, any one that plans to buy this model should read about coil whine in the xps series. i think it can give the general idea of what's ahead.
it's a real pain so it's better to avoid buying it if there's an evidence of a coil whine problem, or to buy it some place that won't give you any troubles if you'll send it back.

Does your Latitude have on-site warranty service (normal for Latitudes and Precisions)? You can check the warranty by entering the service tag into the Dell support site. If so, you can ask discuss your problems (heating and whine) with Dell and the likely outcome is that they will send a technician to change the mainboard.

I've got an interesting problem with my E5570 in which the internal display freezes, turns purple and fades to black. It's happened about 6 times in two days but is totally unpredictable. Initially the conclusion was a replacement display plus cable but yesterday I plugged in an external screen into the VGA and this lost the signal when the display problem occurred, which suggests a mainboard problem (I should emphasise that my E5570 is scratch and dent from Dell Outlet which means that someone sent it back. My assumption is that it went back because of this problem which wasn't identified and fixed before the computer was sent to me). Anyway, I'm expecting a visitor on Monday or Tuesday with replacement mainboard, display and display cable. Scratch and dent means cosmetic damage (there were a few small paint chips on the lid) but the computer should be fully functional.

damn:/ well, it's a gamble. i hope that everything will turn out good.
if everything will go smoothly, mine will go back to the store.

do you have any ideas regarding the theory that the models with the uv processors are less likely to suffer from overheating and coil whining?

Quick question. For some reason the coil whine (is worser when connected to ac + coil whine from the ac adapter itself) was reduced to almost non in both - about a day and a half after I finished upgrading to windows 10, and did a bios and drivers update. I also reduced the cpu to 90%.
I have only few days left to replace it. Any chance that the coil whine is gone completely?

The BIOS update could well have changed something which as reduced the whine. Reducing the maximum CPU power state to 90% will have probably disabled turbo mode and consequently the maximum heat generated by the CPU.

I drained and recharged my E5570's battery and didn't notice any heating. I did notice the battery charge rate was initially at about 50W - higher than I would have expected considering I had enabled Express charge.

Is there a specific place where your E5570 heats up?

Thanks, i already got approved to send it back, and not all the problems are present suddenly. I will update if there's any change.

The upper side (upper keyboard area), mostly on the left is getting very hot. also the same area in the keyboard. i noticed that it is getting really hot after 20-30 min of web browsing, and after 10 minutes of streaming low quality videos. so the heating problem is still there.

weird question. is it possible to limit the i5-6440hq, so it will perform more like a uv cpu (and if so, how will it perform when comparing to a normal uv cpu)?
it seems like some kind of solution to overheating..

    maybe something like:
Disable C-States in the BIOS, disable all subsequent TurboSpeed functions of the CPU and activate only one CPU core.
