    hey, i just recieved my e5570 fhd, i5-6440hq, 250gb ssd, amd r370.
first impression is great, great keyboard (besides the arrow keys which are akward), great bright screen, great speakers, very snappy.
15 minutes after activating it for the first time (probably nothing is being installed at this time), after installing chrome and with 2 tabs open, the back side of the laptop was freakin hot, and the keyboard was pretty hot as well.

another major problem is that there's this annoying coil whine. it's louder when it's connected to ac, but it's still noticable on battery mode.

should i replace it or wait for the problem to go away on its own?
i don't understand the source of the coil whine, so i have no idea if it's an indication of a major hardware problem + if it's gonna get worse in a few weeks/months.

I've also now got an E5570 with similar spec to yours except no dGPU. I can hear no whine.

I had some initial problems with the display going funny (bar and then going black) but these appear to have gone away since I updated the BIOS and drivers. I have also updated windows (10). I haven't noticed any problems with heat.

    thanks and enjoy:)
i did the bios & drivers update. all besides upgrading to windows 10.

    regarding the coil whine:
according to the e5570 review in notebookcheck, the coil whine: "sound like sizzling capacitors... sounds evocative of fried electronics".
is it a defact and will this components fail eventually, or is it possible that it will just go away?
it seems safe to assume that if your unit doesn't have heat issue or coil whine problem, then it's probably a defect? i guess the dgpu might be contributing to the generated heat?

as i said, the fan almost never kicks in although it passed the dell health test. when surfing the web+utorrent in the background it gets very hot. when i updated the drivers it got blazing hot.

    1. Try installing Dell Command | Power Manager and see the effect of different thermal management profiles.

    2. Run HWiNFO and enable sensors. This will show the fan speed if it is running.

Short bursts of CPU activity don't generate enough heat to get the fan running but if you run wPrime 1024 then the fan should come into life.

    Thanks, i'll try it soon.
I didnt had the chance to really stress the system. How can i tell if the cpu usage is normal? And how can i disable the dgpu? Also, what is the battery run time in yours?

When the computer is on idle the the CPU usage, as shown by Task Manager should only be a few percent while the CPU speed as shown by HWiNFO should be at the minimum. I'm running benchmarks at the moment. Testing the battery will come later but I've noticed idle power drain of around 8W (measured by my mains power meter - power drain on battery should be lower because extra power management is activated).

    yes. thank you.
first thing i tried was changing the different power plans. nothing seemed to make much of a difference.
little update: after updating the bios, the fan does work. it's pretty loud (and it doesn't seem to change the fact that the back of the laptop is extremely hot).
i think i'll send mine back. this coil whine + fan noise is too much.
i did a research before buying this model, and notebookcheck + several users said they had this problem (some didn't).
one user said: "High frequency coil noise - I had Dell switch mobbo 2x times but to no good. Dell technician told me that coil whine might be fixed with new mobbo hw revision coming in the summer".
so i'm really interested on what might be causing this coil whine, cause otherwise it's a great laptop.

Yeah I wouldn't buy that Dell is going to come out with a new mobo hw revision. They said the exact same thing about the XPS 15/Precision 3800 but it was still a crap shoot whether or not you got a quiet board.

Update to win 10 and see if it runs any cooler. Mine did, but it's not the same cpu.
    About the coil whine...tough luck.

thanks, i'm going to return it anyway (too noisy and the heat issue is a big problem).
there's no logic in replacing it to another identical unit cuz there's a chance that the next unit will be from the same batch or something.
i'll hate to send it back because the screen and keyboard are just great.

tr0tt3r said that he didn't notice coil whine in his e5570 with the less powerfull i5-6200u (meanwhile john bought the same unit - i5-6440hq minus the dgpu - but didn't notice coil whine as well).

anyway that the coil whine has something to do with the high voltage cpu? in that case, i'll just replace it to the model with the low voltage cpu.
