With the new ControlVault WBF driver, it is finally possible to use the fingerprint reader for more than just PBA and Window Logon. Just got UPEK Protector Suite 2011 working side-by-side with Dell Data Protection | Access, although only one can be enabled at once.

    1. Uninstall Dell ControlPoint Security Manager and Dell Security Devices Driver Pack. Reboot.
    2. Install UPEK Protector Suite 2011. Reboot.
    3. Update ControlVault firmware to A23. Reboot.
    4. Install Dell ControlVault WBF Driver. Make sure WBF is enabled after installation.
    5. Install Dell Data Protection | Access Driver Package.
    6. Install Dell Data Protection | Access Middleware Package. Reboot.
    7. Install Dell Data Protection | Access Application Package. Reboot.
    8. Open Dell Data Protection | Access and click Advanced then Access Preferences then "Disable Dell Secure login."
    9. Setup UPEK Protector Suite as usual. If UPEK Protector Suite has problems opening Control Center and DDP|A is already installed, repair the Protector Suite installation.

If the logon screen shows UPEK Fingerprint Logon and "Other Users," run "netplwiz" and check "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."

    Additional Notes:
    - Fingerprint response time may be slower than before, possibly due to WBF.
    - Install UPEK Protector Suite after uninstalling DCP Security Manager. If other fingerprint software is installed before Protector Suite (ie. DDP|A), it will refuse to install.
    - Compatible with Latitude - E6410, E4310, E6410 ATG, E6320, E6420, E6420 ATG, E6520, E6420 XFR, E6220, E6510 and Precision - M4500, M6500, M4600, M6600. First-generation E-series (E4300, E6400, E6500, etc.) are not officially supported, although it should work (it is working fine on my E4300 after I updated its ControlVault firmware using A23 for the E6410).

    Hi all,

if got a little problem regarding the installation of the protector suite on my Latitude E6410. First I set up a fresh windows 7 64bit Professional installation and I followed the posted installation order. But the problem is that the protector suite and also the Dell Data Protection Data can't register any fingerprint.
    - Dell software: all two sensors are working "ok", but no fingerprint reader found.
    - Protector suite: no biometrical device found. attach or activate the device
But I could register a fingerprint in the windows tool and the login with the windows tool is working.

Is it necessary to install and uninstall the Control Point Security Manager and the Security Device Driber Pack? I only installed the Control Vault Driver bevor following the instructions.

Could you please give me any help for solving the problem?

Yes, it is necessary to uninstall all older versions of security software before beginning. Otherwise, there will be a conflict as they are all trying to use the FPR. Since DDP|A replaces the DCP Security Manager, there is no reason to keep the old version around.

Also, make sure that Dell Secure Login is disabled before trying to use UPEK.

I tried this on an E6500, on step 4 when I go to enable WBF, it just gives me an error saying "Could not enable WBF interface." also when I try to update the firmware, it gets stuck at "Going to update the PBA. (~30 seconds)" and eventually says "ERROR(00100003): Could not update the PBA. ERROR: Could not update ControlVault firmware. Restart the system and try again."

it's not my computer so I didn't try much more than that, the person said they didn't mind that the fingerprint reader didn't work. it may still work on a first gen E-series but the chance is probably pretty low.

If the firmware doesn't update, the chance of getting it to work is pretty much zero. Speaking of firmware, A23 was released on 7/21. Looks like same firmware but different batch file.

I tried up to now different ways of installation:
    1. follow your way as described above (also with firmware version A23)
    2. follow the way I described
    3. follow the way Dell homepage described (install data protection driver without control vault, install wbf-driver, install firmware)
The result and the problems are always the same. Protector suite or data protection software can't register any fingerprint data. Only the windows tool is working.

In Biometric Devices in the Control Panel, click Change biometric settings and make sure biometrics are on and users are allowed to logon using fingerprints.

Also, when you're trying to use UPEK, is Dell secure login disabled? Only one software can be used at once.

The biometric settings are ok, I'm able to logon via fingerprint reader. The windows tools is working, but protector suite can't detect any USB fingerprint reader device.

Dell secure login was also disabled as described.

If protector suite and dell data protection are installed both, the fingerprint reader isn't working in any software solution. If I only install the dell data protection software fingerprint reader is working and fingerprints can be stored.

It's a real shame that first-generation E models aren't supported. Especially since owners of that generation were the ones that started the negative feedback which ultimately led to this addition...

If you install DDP|A, does UPEK work? I did start out with a fresh install of Windows though, so software issues or conflicts are less likely.
