Hi guys, can anybody please compare the noise produced by the fan installed in the intel-only and intel+nvidia versions? I was hoping that a larger fan of 840m-version might be somewhat quieter/less high-pitched. Thanks!

Hi owners, would any of you be kind enough to tell me if the touchpad on this model is a precision touchpad or not?

    Thanks

I have no comparison with the intel-only variant, the intel+nvidia combo can get loud when tortured, not squeaking though. Otherwise runs completely silent during normal use.

Hello all, what types of temperatures are owners getting?

I just bought a new E7450 with i5-5300U. Darn thing runs hot and noisy. In a cool room, the CPU idles at 40C and quickly spikes to 88C with basic tasks such as browsing the internet or watching YouTube videos. As you might expect, this means the fan is often spinning very loudly. Not something I expected with a Broadwell CPU with only a 15TDP. Is this normal? Do I have a problem? A big thank you to anybody with any advice!

Testing with the latest version of HWMonitor. Also have the latest version of the Intel Thermal Framework driver.

I have one with the i7-5600u and while in the docking station (connected to 3 external 24" monitors) the idle temp is about 48C, out of the dock it idles around 38C. When I have netflix, youtube and one other adobe flashed based windows open concurrently, it gets to about 72C, if I'm only watching netflix or youtube it's around 60C (while in the dock, subtract about 10 degrees when out of the dock). The only time I've seen it go above 80C is when I have several virtual machines running at the same time. then cpu will be pegged at 100% and after a minute or two the temp will get to 99C and stay there.

But the fan normally is very quiet unless the temps reach 99C. In a typical office environment, I can't hear the fan at all until temps reach 99C then I can barely hear it.

thenew3, thanks for the quick feedback. I can't imagine the thermals between the i7-5600U and the i5-5300U are all that much different. I'm sad to see that my temps are 10-20C higher than yours, leads me to believe my unit potentially has a fault. The fan noise is very irritating. Now I'm trying to decide whether I contact Dell for replacement/service, or whether I just skip a step and re-apply new thermal paste to the heatsink.

i7-4600U w/ discrete graphics here. Docked seems to average 40C with outlook, couple of web browsers and IM clients open. Fan is basically silent.

Spyder -- I'd call Dell if I were you. I'd say you've got some sort of thermal paste problem or similar.

So, I purchased a e7450 from the outlet and to my surprise it has the nvidia 840m in it....this was not listed in the specs! The touchscreen has pretty bad backlight bleed and I was going to return it. Does the the nvidia 840m sell for much of a premium? The specs of my system are:

    i7 5600U
    2x4 ram
    256 msata ssd
    touchscreen
    backlit keyboard
    4 cell battery

My guess would be around $800-$900. Out of curiosity why not just have Dell swap the screen? If you got this on last week's coupon I bet it was a pretty good deal, even better if it has the Nvidia card!
