    Hi All,

Speaking of a new Precision launch, will that occur this year or next? I realize the current 7710 is still (fresh) not even a year old. If I am not mistaken the 7710 was announced last OCT 2015 and really didn't
go on sale until very early this year. (feel free to correct me if I am wrong)

I am just curious because if I was to purchase the 7710 sometime during the Holidays would that be considered too late? I am not sure how frequently mobile workstations launches occur.

    Thanks,

New models typically are announced 2-3 months after Intel does their CPU refresh (with another few weeks before they actually start shipping). I've been watching for years and the Precision refresh is always tied to an Intel CPU refresh. The 7720 (if that's what they call it) will be a Precision with an Intel Kaby Lake CPU.

Now I haven't been paying close attention to Intel lately but as far as I know, volume production of Kaby Lake CPUs is set for "late 2016". It has been said that Kaby Lake laptops should start becoming available in the fall. The Precision refresh usually comes after most of the other lines are refreshed so I think early next year would be a good bet for the next model Precisions. They won't be pushing to get these out in time for the holiday shopping season, as businesses and not individual consumers are where most of the business comes from.

    Thanks Aaron for this info.

So maybe if that's the direction and if I am lucky even though the Kaby Lake workstation refresh probably won't become available until early next year we perhaps will get a preview late in the fall of what the refresh will compose of as far as any changes other then the CPU.

Of course in my case with the possibility of the upcoming Kaby Lake 4k notebooks arriving the fall I may end up getting a non-workstation notebook. Especially with them having a Nivida Pascal GPU and even a 120-Hz G-Sync display.

In addition to Kaby Lake CPUs, I'm quite sure that there will be Pascal-based NVIDIA Quadro cards available.

It appears Kaby Lake also supports DDR4 up to 2400 MHz, USB 3.1 natively, and can supposedly run 4K video fine without an add-on graphics card. From info leaked just in the last week, the low-power mobility SKU will likely be released in 3Q this year (soon!), but the performance version (quad core) will be released 1Q of 2017. Maybe having the low power version out will be enough to get Dell to refresh the Precision laptop before the end of the year, and then add on the high end Kaby Lake SKUs once they are out.

Hyundai Electronics, now SK Hynix. Speccy reports it under the origin name Hyundai for some reason. I was thinking wow, they make RAM too?! Yeah, I've seen those cars. :) Hyundai Electronics (now SK Hynix) and Hyundai Kia are two separate entities. Strange Speccy says Hyundai Electronics though. The cross reference database/file must have old reference or something.

For those who are using manifest files as in the above link for high DPI displays

I remembered this morning, after having upgraded to Windows10 version 1607 (Anniversary) from version 1511, that I needed to re-add the SideBySide PreferExternalManifest DWORD as it was removed during the upgrade.

after following these steps my manifest files are again being recognized in Win1607 and displaying properly on the high DPI laptop display:
    1. Press Windows Button + R, type “regedit”, and then click OK.
    2. Navigate to the following registry subkey:
      • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > SideBySide
    3. Right-click, select NEW > DWORD (32 bit) Value
    4. Type PreferExternalManifest, and then press ENTER.
    5. Right-click PreferExternalManifest, and then click Modify.
    6. Enter Value Data 1 and select Decimal.
    7. Click OK. Exit Registry Editor.

My brand new Dell Precision 7710 arrived today. Intel Xeon E3-1545M v5 (Quad Core Xeon 2.90GHz, 3.80GHz Turbo, 8MB 45W, w/Iris Pro Graphics P580), Nvidia Quadro M3000M, Palmrest with NFC/ Smartcard Reader/ Fingerprint Reader, 64GB (4x16G) 2133MHz DDR4 Memory, 2 x 1TB M.2 PCIe Solid State Drive and 1 x 1TB 2.5inch SATA SDD. The machine does not even start :-( Power button flickers for two seconds and absolutely nothing happens. We have Dell Precision M6300, M6600 and these machines still work without any problem after all the years (24/7/365). I am so disappointed right now.

I am wondering if other people have tested their system temperatures in idle and under load and what temperatures they have got? I have used HWMonitor and also Dell's diagnostic tool at boot up to check the temperatures.

Because it's not got a new chipset, and because the 7510 and 7710 are on MXM graphics anyway, I think it's reasonably likely that any Kaby Lake refresh of the 7710 will just be a new configuration of the existing models. Not by any means definite, of course.

(They could also skip it, as they did with the Broadwell quad cores; I'd still expect a GPU refresh of the existing models some time before early next year.)
