I saw that same blog some months ago when I first received my 7710. It has helped alot. No longer are my toolbars/menu bars in some apps super tiny. There have been a few programs that have not responded even to the manifest but for the most part, using manifest files (we have to enable via registry don't forget) has really saved me when using 4K display. *manifests are only needed when a program doesn't respond to windows scaling. i.e. when toolbars are too small and otherwise unusable.

I'm not a pro photographer/editor though so if there are any negatives to using 4k besides sometimes having a tiny font or menu bar, I'm not aware of such issues.

Anyone know if the HDMI and DisplayPort are managed by the Intel GPU in Optimus mode? Or are they always driven by the Quadro?

I spent most of yesterday trying to get Linux to play nice with the DisplayPort on a Thinkpad W520 using optimus...it was frustrating.

If graphics switching is enabled, HDMI and DisplayPort are hooked up to the Intel GPU.

Thanks for the response , Alex and Mr Home -
I was aware of the Dan Antonielli method , but thanks for mentioning it anyway - what I wanted was an opinion from a Photographer who uses a Dell 7710 and whether it was worth buying one for such a purpose . I have been advised by a very respected and helpful poster on here that it is overkill and while I do agree I was wondering if any Photographers on here use a Dell 7710 and would they recommend one - Thanks .

What he said. On the plus side, it is nice to have the ability to disable Optimus. The Oculus VR headset won't work on most notebooks, but will work on the 7710 since you can get a direct connection between the M5000M and HDMI port.

Very interesting about the Oculus Rift and the m5000m. How is the experience? I think the Oculus recommends a min of GTX 970 (desktop variant GPU) . Regarding VR headsets, I'm actually liking the HTC Vive because of the forward facing camera and it's controls. But still too expensive and too early for me to invest. Very interesting though. I think this is where an eGPU would come in handy for most people interested in VR and who choose to use a laptop. But of course you could not strap an eGPU to a backpack like you could a standalone laptop VR experience :)

*edit: HTC Vive is partnered with Steam. Steam has a downloadable program to analyze if the computer you are on is up to the task of meeting requirements for a VR headset. In this case, the HTC VR headeset (Vive). Here is the report it gave me when I ran that test:

As I sat watching the test I didn't notice any lag in real-time and it looked great/fine. But was just a test and I don't have an actual headset.

I think NVIDIA touts the M5500M as their VR-Ready adapter, but that has not shown up yet as an option for the 7710 as far as I know.

Is there a way to know if Num Lock is on?

I see no light on the Num Lock key and thus, I don't know if the Num Lock is activated or not. At the moment I have to try the right side numeric keypad and see what the response is.

I know I can set it to on in the BIOS, but I often use the numeric keypad for its other functions, not only numbers.

I know. It seems that of all the indicators to display NumLock should be one of the main indicators LEDs. But they did not include a NumLock indicator, not even via software on screen display. Unfortunately, no way of knowing if NumLock is on or off without installing a third party program. I use Logitech wireless USB Anywhere MX mouse which comes with Logitech SetPoint software. It can optionally display a nice on screen display indicator showing Caps Lock, Num Lock state and Volume levels. But because I use VMs often, the numlock state in the VM Guest is not always the same state as that in the Host. And that difference in NumLock state between Host and Guest VMs causes NumLock on screen notification to constantly flash on /off back and forth. So I've disabled that software notification. i.e. I don't have a solution to NumLock indicator other than I mostly use an external keyboard (which interestingly does not have same issue about knowing correct NumLock state between Host and Guest VM as the setpoint software did)
