I do not disagree. It would be nice to get something official from Dell.

It is possible that the external GPU would still work with a thunderbolt 3 computer even without explicit BIOS support of the Intel External Graphics (eGFX) standard... but maybe not have all the features/bells/whistles that you would otherwise get if it did have Intels eGFX support. AMD says that they now have drivers for eGFX to display in the Windows Notification tray that (to me) sounds akin to the Nvidia GPU Activity . It will show which programs are currently utilizing the external GPU so that if you eject/disconnect the eGPU you know to close those programs first. Question I have is how to switch between iGPU dGPU eGPU? That may be another reason for explicit eGFX support.

Who will be the guinea pig?

I don't think the BIOS will be needed to allow graphics switching. This is a driver/GUI issue that may not be worked out yet. On the NVIDIA side, with Optimus, you can decide which GPU a program will use from the right-click menu or NVIDIA control panel.

I've read (but never tried myself) that Optimus already works with a Thunderbolt-attached NVIDIA GPU, allowing you to use the NVIDIA GPU to render programs but have the output display on the laptop screen, but only if there is no discrete GPU already in the system. This would need to be updated to further differentiate between the internal discrete GPU and the external GPU.

Work just ordered one of these for me, trying to decide on a backpack. Think I have it narrowed down to the Everki Titan/Beacon/Atlas, wondering what you all use or if these are decent packs?
Think my configuration is xenon, 32 gb ram, 512ssd, 1tb 7200 hhd, (amazon purchased 1tb m.2 ssd I'll add) m3000m, 4k screen, and thunderbolt dock once they're available again

I've been using the everki Titan since getting the 7710. It is my favorite bag I've ever had. I like it better than my my leather tumi on wheels. TONS of space and it had the softest protective Muppet fur inside. The laptop pocket is way more than sufficient for the 7710. So the Titan is my recommendation. Ill post picks of the Titan with the 7710 if you like.

*added some photos. The 7710 looks like a 13 or 15" laptop inside that bag. This bag is huge (Trump voice).

PHOTOS of Everki Titan with a 7710 inside:

That is the AC power supply brick under the mouse and cables. That accessory bag came with the backpack. I've fit TWO 7710 in this backback (in separate sheaths - zippered compartments) when delivering the other 7710 to my co-worker . This backpack is large, with many compartments/zipper pockets.

Thanks for that. I was leaning towards the Titan, I travel 50/50 and bring stockpiles of stuff, hhds, adapters, cables, papers, manuals, etc. I have the Swiss gear now for my w550s and I love it for size capacity and durability. Hoping Titan will leave me feeling as impressed.

Question on it though, would it fit under airplane seat in coach? Or should I pick up the smaller sized bag as well for when flying?

Yes, but depends how full you pack it your bag. If you notice on that last photo those two lumps that sit horizontal to each other midway on the front of the bag? Those lumps contain buckles specifically for attaching latches meant for squishing the bag as slim as possible. I'll post image as an example with just my laptop and accessory bag inside. I've been on 4 or 5 flights in business class with this bag and more than just the laptop and accessories. I often bring my 3 ring binder file and mechanical keyboard in the bag too. If I bring my HDD with external toaster cradle then I leave the keyboard at home. Although I my try to pass them all through next time. It can squish to slimmer proportions than my tumi on wheels which is physically much more square shaped and the Tumi always passes.

quality of the Titan is great. Still as new feeling as the day I got it. Excellent quality. If tumi made this it would sell for $800 at least. Seriously, I've been to the Tumi store and it has nothing on this Everki.

I'm not sure if I could recommend anything other than Tumi wheel bag or this backpack.

Thanks again, I'll be purchasing this bag as soon as my laptop comes in. I'd say I'd buy it now and have it ready, but our it department isn't very laptop savy (current up to date), she said it was the 17" and I worked with her on the configuration, so I feel pretty safe, but us engineers have been surprised a few times with end result laptop awaiting in our office before. Last set was precision 5100 and ended up with 3800, before that was precision 4800 with i5 and no dgpu. But I feel pretty confident, maybe I will just order and worse comes I'll use it as a spare for my Alienware r3 if/when I don't feel like using the rog nomad backpack.

Thanks a lot tho, any question in my mind about a backpack or this backpack fully answered.

Ha, just sit by her as she orders it. Expressing your disdain, teasingly, if she should get it wrong. Then, if it is wrong, it wont be a big deal when you tell her you got the wrong laptop. You've got to know how to work these POs

Yea if it was only that simple. I sat down with her a few weeks ago and went through the configuration, she was also playing around with a few of her own. She then submitted it for approval, which took the last 2 weeks. I got a message from her Thursday saying it was ordered. I asked her which size, she said she thinks the 17". Asked her to check, as laptop bag is needed for a 17" and I can reuse my bag if it was 15", she said it was the 17".

In office next week, but out of town fir the 3 weeks after, so hopefully it'll be ready when I get back. Previous work laptop was a latitude i5u which running cad solid works multiple vms etc, it wasn't cutting it. So I've been using my Alienware for work last 6 months now.
