Graphics Card upgrade for M6800 ?

    What would be the advantage coming from an M5000M going to an RTX 4000 performance wise?

    You are looking at in the neighborhood of a 2× graphics performance increase in this case.

    I actually tested a M5000M to P5000 upgrade, and it was about an 80% improvement in graphics performance. I'd expect P4000 to be more like a 55-60% improvement, if you could get the P4000 to run properly at turbo speeds.
    (The performance jump from Maxwell to Pascal was a good bit larger than the performance jump from Pascal to Turing.)

    There's a problem with the Pascal series. You have to flash an early engineering sample vBIOS in order for them to work with Windows in the Precision M6700 and M6800 systems. We have vBIOS'es that work fine for the P3000 and P5000. The only one that we have for the P4000 that works, though, disables turbo boost. So, you could use it but the actual performance gain would be less.

    (You can use Pascal cards with Linux on the M6800 without having to do a vBIOS flash.)

    Those a great news.
    For the P5000 venue I need to be totally sure that works without a glitch on the M6800.
    Most likely I am going to get rid of my 7730 because I am not happy at all with it that is why I am re-evaluating all the possible paths to upgrade the M6800.

    P5000 has been hit-and-miss. I had to get rid of mine because it was causing regular BSOD's. @JEAMN had similar trouble with a GeForce 1070. @bobmook had trouble with his (might have been physically defective?). @DynamiteZerg has a working M6800/P5000 setup though.

    I will wait a bit to see if I get a good option in order to upgrade.

    I have a P4000 that's working fine in my M6700, no BSOD at all, if you are interested and living in EU, pm me :)

    edit : and also finally, I was wrong, P4000 vbios aren't "boost disabled", the boost it just very low (1253MHz), I think it was made like that to have a "big" gap between this and the P5000 :)

    This might not be relevant, but I got an egpu working via an mxm to m.2 adapter with an adt link m.2 to pci x16 adapter stack. 32gbps desktop gpu on this laptop now, all you need is sata power and whatever the GPU itself needs (no pascel limitation either, since I tested a turing 1650). Kills any portability this laptop had in the first place though lol.

    Hi guys, i'm new to this trhead, i am looking for an affordable Workstation , and somehow found about the M6800, and after reading this thread i have some concerns since i got lost into this information's flood.

    1.- If i am into video editing, it's really an improvement the hazzle of upgrading the gpu?
    Also because i am planning that i will hackintosh the device.

    2.- I read that there are LVDS and eDP displays, the 1st on the earlier models and 2nd on the latest, but i also read that some people even have 4k displays???? Is this 4K an specific version of the M6800 or it was adapted?

    3.- This is an advice, to avoid the need of different pads because of thickness, You can use the K5 Pro Viscouse Thermal Paste, i am in a forum where we upgrade 2009-2011 imac's GPUs to get metal support , and the pads are a concerns there too. The most wanted GPUs are the k610-k5100 quadros, gtx760-880 and wx4130-wx7100. This paste also have a better heat conduction and it is dielectric. Also this paste have no mechanical action on the surfaces it contacts .
