Good news for Latitude X1 owners!

There were compatibility problems with the V3, so it was cut.

If anyone has a Dell X1 (or a Samsung Q30 - they are the same machine) with a SSD (any make), please post your benchmarks - be sure to indicate the exact SSD model, because they vary in read/write speed ratings, and OS version. I'd like to determine if this machine can write quicker than 38MB/s.

Thanks for all the tips! I just purchased some memory and an Mtron SSD and I'm ready to give this a try.

One question ... how did you guys do a clean install of XP when there is no internal drive on the X1. I'm concerned that there will be no driver to run the external CD drive.

 

Just use the CD player that came with the machine - no drivers are needed. However, make sure that in BIOS, under 'Boot Order', place the CDROM before the hard drive in the boot order.

BASpro: By the way, write speed issue could be with partition alignment as partitions created by WinXP aren't usually aligned correctly with SSD erase blocks. This most noticeable affected those disks with notorious Jmicron controller without cache, but applies to all SSDs.

Win7 creates aligned partitions by default, issue can be fixed afterwards for XP too.

There must be something in bios limiting the speed (I've checked all visible setting already) or there could be a compatibility issue with the SSD controller and the computer chipset. I've contacted the manufacturer of the SSD controller (EastWho.com) and they have not replied.

 

By the way, which BIOS version you have? I have A03 and some problems with similar 64gb drive.

I want to change to PhotoFast 1.8" G-Monster-50 IDE V4. I recently found a vendor in Germany: 32GB 200EUR, 64GB 290EUR, 128GB 470EUR.

I love my Dell Latitude X1. The model will soon be five years old. I can't understand, why no manufacturer creates a worthy successor.

 

There actually seems to exist a SSD drive that is compatible with X1 even without an adapter: the KingSpec KSD-CF18.1-XXXMJ. It has a 50 pin IDE interface and is said to work fine with Dell X1 without any adapter.

Has anyone tried it? It seems like an interesting alternative - and rather cheap too! It's around $135 with shipping from Hongkong on Ebay for a 32GB drive.

Or - if you still want a zif drive - there is the KSD-ZF18.1-032MJ for a similar price. Anyone tried that one? It should work with that adapter Ivar has been recommending, right?
