I don't have ProSupport. I just have the Basic 3yr NBD warranty, I also have complete care. Does this mean that I'm SOL and stuck with this machine? I would expect to be treated the same as you in regards to this situation. I can't justify spending $200+ to upgrade to ProSupport when there is no guarantee that my problems will ever really be fixed.

nonono, I wasn't saying that. Unfortunately, the guy I worked with today only does ProSupport. I mean, I did pay extra so I do expect a certain level of care, but that doesn't mean that he's doing anything outside of what regular support would be doing at this point. Business class has a much better warranty than consumer any way. Just call them up and see what happens. I'm letting him go through the procedure that they're required to go through for "heat" related issues first and after that pans out, we'll go from there. I expect that you'd be in a similar boat.

Well holy crap. I'm getting my motherboard and heatsink replaced and my guy too said that if this resolution does not work, the next step would be to replace it with a same or better model.

Good stuff! It'll be interesting to see if there are any revisions to the heatsink. Doubtful, but we'll see.

Same old parts. From this, I don't think there has been in hardware revisions. Unless the dispatch service kits don't increment. The numbers here are mostly for the service kits not the individual part numbers themselves. Thanks for the list!

Edit: Although I know the XPS 15 (L521x) situation was a bit different (one major reason being we have business-grade laptops and superior support), how was the XPS situation handled? I didn't read the 637+ page thread.

From what I remember, there was repasting done, some heat sink replacements, but mostly Dell pushed out a bunch of BIOS updates and determined that it wouldn't throttle with a bigger power adapter so they gave a 130W to anyone who complained. They didn't necessarily solve the heat issue, but presumably the throttling was fixed...?

So I was told once again that the part was backordered and there was no ETA. I'm curious to see if anyone else actually gets theirs since others were told it is in stock..

A few days ago I used chat to figure out how to add the service tag to my above because it still wasn't showing up. Simple thing, took two seconds.

Apparently my current case is now attached to that old case number and has been reassigned to the guy I chatted with. This makes zero sense to me.. It better not cause any issues

Has anyone tried using Intel XTU to undervolt the CPU to reduce temps? It seems Intel has enabled undervolting for mobile Haswell CPUs... if the e6540 mobo supports it of course. While obviously not the ideal solution, it may help out with the high temps and throttling. Maybe there is something similar for the Radeon GPU as well?
