Not really.. Properly applied, past isn't the weakness in this system. I'm on MX4 myself.

Gap is possible, I really think the limiting factor here is the single fan. It's not capable of cooling the heatsink. Or, assuming the fan was capable, the heat from the heat pipe isn't being efficiently transfered to the fins. Something like that. Shouldn't the heat pipes be a similar temp to the cpu/Gpu? I need to check those temps with my temp gun..

Either way, if they are actually working on a solution, they'll have people a lot better versed in thermo then us looking at it. I'm just frustrated that no one will contact me back..... Guess I'll call here in a little while

The heatpipe temps on mine were far above the heatsink temps, 10-15c

:p We can only hope... Looking at Dell's track record (XPS for example), they obviously assume 95% of their customer base won't ever push their machines to the limit so they can skimp out on the thermal system.

    Edit: Please do call :)

Twitter people told me to give them another 24hrs... I've had a lot of dealings with Dell and normally, I'm not this patient.

I thought this might be the case, but I wasn't sure. Makes sense I guess. I'll poke around mine and see if I get similar results

Edit: my pipes seem to be running about on per with my reported temps.. They get a few C warmer where they merge.. Mine seem to be accurately absorbing heat and dissipating it, if yours are that much hotter I'd say somethings quite wrong. Unless I'm thinking about it wrong..?

edit 2: called to see what was up with the case # twitter gave me and guess what? the case was created and then closed. no info, no updates, no anything!

Mkay, here's the deal. If you see my above post, you'll see that Twitter is just screwing around. Idk if it's just me, but if any of you are still waiting on them, I urge you to just call instead. I got in touch with a very helpful gentleman in ProSupport. First off, the heatsink assembly/fan is not back ordered (at least in the US). He was going to schedule a service call for me, but after what happened with the last tech, he's NDB mailing me the assembly to replace on my own. After I get the part, he's going to check in with me and we'll go from there. If the assembly doesn't fix the issue, we'll be looking at alternative systems. ProSupport ftw!

Did he actually say you'd be looking at alternative systems?

yes he did.. his works were something along the lines of "you paid for a system that should be able to work right so if it still doesn't work right we'll look at getting you into something that will." not exactly that, but he mentioned different models several times.

I'm hoping for the same outcome with the M4800 in my future

if they do offer you a system exchange they're not supposed to downgrade you. From my experience anyway. M4800 is the only 15.6" with the same cpu option and an optical drive.

Do you have ProSupport? If you have ProSupport I can get you in touch with my guy. Otherwise, there's not much to reference. All the case shows is that they're mailing me a heatsink
