I have contact Dell US, i get the opportunity to chat with a staff member, he said to me that's is not possible to get this option for the moment no smartcard, expresscard and fingerprint.

All this options will be available after 15 November, if he said the truth any people have expresscard port or fingerprint ?

    Thank you !

I want to say that it was available at one point. I bought mine on the outlet and I think there was a few that had the option when I was looking last month. Don't quote me on that though! Perhaps they ran into supply problems..

    Hello,
Thanks for the pointer to the utility Speccy. Its a nice little one and it helped me understand that my heating issues were due to the Video card. I had Windows 8.1 installed and I think the drivers that installed natively (and from Dell site) are not 100% compatible and it kept GPU running hot even on lighter loads. When I got latest drivers from AMD site (these were still in beta ), all heat and fan issues got fixed. The laptop now runs cool as ice :)
    Thanks for assisting on this.

What type of display does the E6540 have, IPS or TN. If it's TN, then I'll go with Inspiron 7537 instead which is IPS.

Anyone knows how to disable discrete graphics nVidia video card outside of BIOS by physical means? Also, did anybody come to situation of replacing/upgrading motherboard?

Looking to purchase the E6540 for work (but want to have it for occasional gaming while away from home), this unfortunately limits my choices as I cannot simply purchase a 'gaming/personal' laptop and get it passed by work. The E6540 seems to be one of the few available Business Laptops with a dedicated GPU that isn't a FirePro/Quardo which means games 'should' run relatively well.

I've read through this thread, and various others and have had conflicting views on the performance/driver issues with regards to the GPU - can anyone care to comment on its use as a 'gaming' machine and if the switching between the integrated and dedicated GPU have been resolved as of late? (Tbh I'd be happy to completely disable the integrated GPU if possible?).

    Thanks!

Been using it to play FSX with numerous addons and graphical enhancements, and the performance has been quite good. I go use a gaming specific power profile that keeps the CPU at 2.2-2-4Ghz in order to keep temps stable. Rise of Flight and Red Orchestra 2 also perform and look good.

If you leave the CPU unlocked though, expect overheating and throttling whilst gaming.
