No info on the modular battery, he didn't see one in the system. They don't have bottom panels for resale, but they're going to send me one any way! Today I'll do testing of current paste, repaste and start the break in for further testing. Then when the new panel gets here I'll see about modding it!

Re-pasted this morning, and currently showing 45 CPU and 42 GPU during general Win 7 use. Probably not worth stressing until the paste has bedded in?

I use Targus Chill Hub for cooling and on general use (Internet browsing, text editing, even HD movies) processor stays at 40-42C. So heating, if You don't do a lot of gaming is not a problem.
The overall productivity is very good, considering i switched HDD for Intel 530 series SSD..runs very fast.
The battery life with my 9 cell battery is 7-8 hours (Wifi On, some editing, internet browsing).

If general use is the only use, is repasting still advisable? I'm already planning on dropping in an Intel 530 SSD...

Also, for the Intel 530 SSD, should I go mSATA and use a migration tool to move the OS? Or should I swap out in the internal drive and migrate with move conventional means (reinstall since it's a new machine?). Thanks!

Repasting isn't a bad idea if you're going to do it right.. Download throttlestop and monitor your cpu temps to see if you have an ok stock paste job or not.

Don't clone your OS to the SSD/MSATA. Always do a fresh install for the best performance! It should come with a reinstall disk and a drivers disk anyway..

    Hello all,
I bought a E6540 refurbished from the outlet. Right from day one I see this laptop is generating a lot of heat with Fan cosntantly spinning making loud noise even for light loads. I am only running Chrome, outlook, Excel, Skype and such business programs and I do not see the CPU being used more than 2% either. I am feeling very disappointed about this now. Has anyone else seen these issues? Is there anyway to troubleshoot this and fix?

What clock speed is your CPU defaulted at? Also, have you installed Dell Power Manager? I don't have any issues with heat and fans on light use.

I've been using this great little utility to monitor clock speeds and temps. Will post back to let you know what it is (not at home right now).

edit: this is the utility http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download

    Hello !

I am planning to order a new laptop, i read this forum some weeks now to know better this laptop before ordering
Dell latitude E6540 have ExpressCard Slot normally (here is the documentation : http://www.portable-etudiant.com/pdf/e6540/e6540.pdf )
Unfortunally the vendor before makethe order to confirm that Expresscard is available and dell said me no ..
It's seems that this "option" is not available now and in the furture and cannot be order

So do you know if it's possible to add this with an adaptater like that : Dell Latitude E6500 Precision M4400 Express Card Cage DP N 0G971F G971F E23 | eBay

The model i can buy haven't fingerprint module it's not a problem for me but the expresscard yes.
I think the motherboard of each model is the same so it can be possible i guess with the right adapter ?

    Thank you !!!

No, I don't think that will work. It seems if you want an express card you have to get the fingerprint and smartcard reader:

SmartCard Reader/Contactless Smartcard Reader/FIPS certified Fingerprint Reader with 54mm Express Card

It doesn't look like you can get ahold of this stuff afterwards. It'll ship with a different palm rest due to the finger print reader. It's possible that the fingerprint reader, contactless reader and expresscard slot are all one module which is why they have to be ordered together.

They accidentally sent me a frame. Like the magnesium frame. Not sure what to do with it, but it seems I have an extra now lol
