Do you mean you installed the hard drive driver? the application? or both?

If it was just the driver I will try installing this as I am having this issue (I think). I barely hear some faint crackling and an occasional pop. But it is not that bad.

I've been struggling with this audio issue for a week now and can't get over it. I reinstalled everything without the Dell pre-installed software and the situation improved somewhat, but I still get this skipping sound every 5 to 10 seconds.

I think the only major difference between our units is the GPU and that the solutions to this issue lie somewhere between the GPU, Intel WLAN card and Vista. It might even be a simple driver issue, but at least the current versions still haven't been able to sort it out.

I also got a response from Dell stating that: "The skipping/crackling/popping sound seems to be a feature in these machines, but maybe you also have some defective parts that make things even worse." They offered to change the MOBO and WLAN card, but I have feeling it won't help.. :(

It's kind a sad that they (MS, nVidia, Dell..) haven't been able to sort this elementary thing, because other than this the E6400 is an excellent piece of notebook..

    HAHAA!! Solution is here!

I was just about to call Dell and ask them to take this back, but then I decided to install the audio and SATA drivers one more time. And now everything works! Not a snap/crackle/pop anywhere ;)

I'm still a bit confused why this work, but I read from the IDT site that all drivers (relevant..) should be reinstalled after Vista SP1 is applied.

Well, now the E6400 is just perfect and without the Dell installed software even the performance is much better.

The night is darkest just before the dawn... :)

PS. Even my old and faithful PS/2 wheel mouse now works perfectly thru E-Dock (previously it was lacking the wheel function).

^ Is this purely a driver or will it produce some resource-hogging monitoring crap like most of Dell's 'drivers' do?

I don't think it is a resource hog. It's something to help all the storage devices work better. It's also Intel, not Dell. Give it a try.

My issue isn't crackling as such - it's the 'pop' or 'skip' that you notice during the Windows startup sound (and others). Are we talking the same thing here? :)

Should I install the Driver or the Application or both?

Maybe you have a different issue. Does it only happen during startup?

I turn off all the standard Windows sound effects so I don't know if I have you problem.
