Plugging and unplugging doesn't make any change to the fan speed. The system is also in power saving mode.

The problem is I am not sure what I see as a problem is really a problem. I want to make sure if always spinning of the fan is problem and if fan shouts down sometime when there is not heavy loads on CPU, for example when working only with internet browser. Do you hear the fan's noise when it is spinning at minimum speed.?

It's always been my experience (even on the E6420, which is virtually the same thing) that while plugged in, the fan would run constantly. While the AC adapter is unplugged, and the system is not under load, the fan would actually shut off and only turn on again if I put the system under load. The fan will only shut off while unplugged if the power save settings are configured correctly.

Hey guys, quick question. My T430 still doesn't show any sign of shipping yet, I ordered it on 02/01. I am looking at an E6430 on eBay with the Core i7-3720QM processor. Since some time has passed and several BIOS updates have been released, have the temperature issues mentioned in this thread been addressed? I am thinking about canceling my T430 and getting an E6430 with the Core i7-3720QM but only if the temperature stays reasonably under control.

I was waiting for a X1 carbon and finally bought this on Ebay. I have been happy with everything but the latest bios update is bringing back the fan more often than when i first got the laptop. Even opening a browser window starts the fan. I will reinstall the OS to see if it helps. The 3720QM processor is actually better than the 3520M that i have, Good luck.

Are you dual monitors off either of these docking stations?

On the E6430, what happens if you install only the intel drivers for video, and NOT the nvidia drivers (perhaps even marking the nvidia device as disabled in device manager)? Will the machine work just fine in intel only mode? Will the nvidia GPU be properly powered down so the machine doesn't get hot/waste energy/have short battery life?

I am ordering a few e6430's and e6530's for work, and we kind of need the quad core CPU, but dell ONLY offers the quad core CPU with nvidia GPU, but we have NO use for the nvidia stuff, and I don't even want to install the nvidia drivers. So I am trying to come up with the best work-around so we don't have to deal with optimus.

I have been experimenting on this same.

I do keep optimus enabled in bios but disable the nvidia in device manager and so far been stable in intel mode.
i could not measure the power draw and all but i suppose once disabled from device manager.
    it wont do much.
system does not heat up and has been pretty stable.

    Hi, I have a question.

The heatsink on i7 quad core and i5 without nvidia is the same?

NVS5200M is ok for older and lower-performance games; it can play (for one example) Star Wars The Old Republic on Medium, and it will play GTA4 and Sleeping Dogs OK at on relatively low settings. It plays Fallout 3 great, but that's a 6-year-old game!

In general, I do not think most people would be pleased with it as a gaming laptop, and don't even try to play newer FPS on it.

Yes, same battery (shared with the E6520 and E6530; NOT shared with the E6320/E6330/E6430s)

Was not the same on the E6420; not sure on this one.
