I would stay away from the I7 quadcore and the nvidia card. As far as the latter is concerned, I know you did not mention it but, as far as I now, you cannot order the E6420 with the quadcore and without the nvidia card.

Just to give you some numbers the I7-2720 is a 45W processor and the nvidia card consumes (i.e., produces heat) for other 35W. As a comparison, the I7-2620 (dualcore) is 35W and the same is true for the I5-2540. I would go for one of these (which in single threaded applications have the same performance of teh I7-2720) and would invest my money in an SSD. Using a quad core sandy bridge processor with a standard HD is like putting a ferrari engine into an old compact car :)

Any of those computers, if designed to accommodate a quad core CPU + dedicated GPU should have plenty of cooling capacity for a dual core CPU with integrated graphics for any temperature under which you are prepared to work. Once the ambient temperature gets towards 35C I find that sweat dripping onto the computer is a bigger potential hazard than the cooling of the computer: It's the user that overheats.

The difference in speed between the entry Core-i5 25x (the 2520M) and the 2540M is 100MHz, both at base speed and peak turbo speed. You're probably best off saving money and going with the 2520M, as both processors have the exact same feature-set.

I agree with the others that I'd go with Intel HD 3000 graphics in your environment; your laptop will run cooler, and still be plenty fast.

Quick follow up to this...finally got a global support rep that knows her job. Turns out that partners buying for their company shouldn't be charged under their reseller accounts. "If the item purchased is not for resale these terms and conditions do not apply." She moved my invoice to the small and medium business division on the 32nd day from invoice, submitted a predated request for return for credit. 4 days later I have the total amount refunded to my line of credit.

So, to all the small businesses that seem to be getting screwed...keep at it. There is at least one good rep in customer service doing her job correctly.

    Got my E6420 yesterday.
    i7-2720qm, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.

Just to make things more clear for everyone, as I asked this questions myself in the past while waiting for it to arrive:

    1. I have absolutely NO build issues with it. no popping corners, everything is balanced and the cuts are all clean.
    2. The 14" LED 1600x900 screen is much better than the one in my old E6400.
    3. The SSD drive is the Samsung PM810.
    4. The 2nd HDD drive bay adapter from the E6400 does not fit.
    5. The machine is MUCH quieter than my old E6400.
    6. I installed a DW5500 WWAN adapter I ordered seperately from eBay and it works great in Win7 64.
    7. Fingerprint scanner is not so good. I constantly have to reswipe. This might be fixed by doing the enrollment process again. will report back.

I installed VMWare workstation on it and moved all my VMs to the new laptop. It's amazingly fast (the upgrade price for the i7-2720qm is well worth it for VMs).

Thought I will give you guys an update of my replacement unit which I received last week. My original 6420 had a very bad case of the popping corner and was uneven when on a flat level surface. With my first contact with dell support they had me send the laptop in for "repairs" to solve the popping bottom panel. I received the repaired unit back and they did not fix it and actually made things worse. The bottem panel still popped out of place and they actually used the wrong size screws to secure the bottom panel/HDD.

I contacted Dell again and after getting thrown around a bit I finally reached their "top tier support team" really nice guy helped me out and understood what I was talking about. They sent me a replacement unit and ALL of the issues are gone. This new laptop which was assembled in china, sits level and has no popping bottom plate at all.

If anyone else is having these types of chassis issues I highly recommend calling Dell and not giving up until you speak with someone who will send you a new replacement unit.

Hi, I'm seriously considerng the E6420 as my next laptop. I'd like to get the Quad Core I7 with the Optimus Graphics chip. I know one of the reviews warned about overheating with the top specs. Has anyone had experience with this configuration? Does the machine get too hot or is the graphics card prone to overheating?

Also, I would get this laptop with the 87W 9-cell battery and a dvd drive. Is the weight manageable to carry around or would I be better off with a thinner, lighter laptop (like the Thinkpad T420s)? Thanks.

You won't get more than a dual core CPU with the T420s (and it's soldered so you can't swap it) and the fan would struggle with any extra heat. However, it's a lot lighter than the E6420 (see my weight measurements). Search this thread for the E6420's weight.

So you need to decide whether you want more power or less weight, or a compromise.
