Actually, battery life on the previous generation (520) was perfectly reasonable - 6 hours on a 6-cell battery. Not bad for a midrange 35 watt processor.

So far, we're not so sure about the heat. The mismatch between the vent in the baseplate and fan is very worrying and the Sandy Bridge chips have acquired an early reputation for running hot. Time will tell. I'm waiting for someone to bring out an IR thermometer for a formal test.

Probably not. From long experience, I can state that it's always best to get contact Dell support and get the matter sorted out early, during the first 21 days.

My e6420 with a i7 2720QM runs much cooler than my e6410 with a i7 620M processor. Both computers have the nvidia graphics.

I was doing some side by side comparisons with my e6420/e6410 and I can tell you after a few minutes passed, the fan was kicking on with the 6410 and the keyboard was getting warm, the e6420 was still silent and the keys were cool to the touch....

I just hope my replacement will be up to par, I won't tolerate a cover that intermittently pops off...

With the amount of issues I'm having, I think I might just end up returning the computer all together. I paid $1500 for this computer and am having all sorts of problems...the e6410 has been trouble free since day 1.

Another thing I noticed is something a bit funny with the video card/display.

Move a window around and closely pay attention to the top window edge and the minimize, maximize, close buttons....do you see artifact /pixelation/jaggedness when you move the window?

I have the NVS4200 and notice it when I move windows around....what about you guys?

I've decided to send this POS back and stick with my e6410. All the reviews on the new exx20 models (on the Dell site) are terrible.

Dell really screwed up on this one, its obvious they switched OEMs and left us holding the bag.

I'll put the $1500 back in the bank and continue out the remaining 2 years of my warranty with my current PC.

Thanks Dell, for cheaping out on build quality, driving your customers to your competitors.

Can you summarize your reasons for return so that we can monitor these issues going forward? Add the pros, too, if you care to.

    What I do like:
    1) The larger touchpad...which supports gestures.

    What I don't like:
The fit and finish of the e6420 is extremely poor:
    1) The keyboard backlight is extremely uneven. (This may be a specific problem)
    2) The back cover separates from the case because the front half is secured by clips and not screws.
    3) The speakers position is poor and the sound is muddy.
    4) Its thicker than the e6410.
    5) The material on the palm-rest is a rubbery material.
    6) The large borders around the display, making the notebook unnecessarily large.
    7.)Loose power connector.

    Thanks!

    1. Dell knows KB backlighting... you must have defective unit.

    2. The chassis assembly is a design problem... something that may get fixed on subsequent builds.

    3. Damn speakers! I thought I would like them up front facing me. I wonder why they can't put kick-a** thin mini quadra planer-type panels in the display bezel. That's a 70's term... can't recall the techno term right now.

    4. How much thicker?

    5. They put that junk in cars and it bakes off in a few years or becomes a sticky mess... why do they bother?

    6. The notebook size is probably not dictated by unused lid space.

    7. Dell knows power connectors... you must have defective unit.
