    Anyone successfully upgrade the lcd?

I bought a 6420 from a friend , but it has the lower resolution screen.
What 14" screen is a direct drop in? Will i need to swap out the cable, too?

Yes, I have upgraded numerous E6420 displays. Of the panels below, I like the AUO the best, followed by the Samsung, and then the LG. Likewise, it is hard to find the AUO and Samsung while the LG is the most common and easy to get.

For the cable, you just need to call or chat Dell and keep asking them to find you one. EBay may be another option.

    thanks so much, Scott.

    One more question

Mine didn't come with the backlit keyboard

From what i've read, they're not a direct replacement since some motherboards don't support it.

How would i go about checking if mine would support one?

There's no need to check the motherboard, it will work. Just buy the E6420 backlit keyboard and install it.

Ph0enix, please clarify: do I understand that you put 16GB of RAM into a Dell Latitude e6420? and it was recognized by Windows, ran stably etc.? I'm looking at replacing my laptop specifically because of this limitation-- I'm doing some work with large-ish databases on my laptop, and need the RAM. If this is solveable I can put off replacing the machine a couple of years. (I do have the quad core CPU, the NVidia graphics, etc. in my e6420.)

The QM67 based system boards will support up to 32GB of PC3-10600 or 16GB of PC3-12800 if you are using the proper quadcore processor.

32GB? Dang! Let me go count my pennies :) Seriously, I will start with 16GB following the examples I've seen here, now that I've read to the end of the thread.

New question, I think (I did search the thread): Has anyone gotten an mSATA drive to a) work in this system b) serve as a cache for a mechanical hard drive in this system using Intel Rapid Storage Technology? Thanks for any specific references e.g. to model of mSATA drive that works, any Windows (or Linux?) drivers/settings required, etc..

What you want is Intel Smart Response Technology (SRT) to use the mSATA as a cache. It should work if your chipset supports it.

    hello guys
after going from page 1 to 102 reading all your experiences with this machine i decided to stick with my E6410 or go for a thinkpad t420 maybe lower brightness screen but for sure build quality is still good i used to like dell for metal cases but switching from screws to clips and un-even keyboard back-lit and corners popping out >>>>>e6420 is a big step back why the hell did Dell make this machine to drive people to hp and lenovo maybe ,i appreciate all the words in every reply in this thread although some opinions are different but the majority says that this is not a business machine as it has all the defects of a consumer one.
    thank you
