If you plan to put Linux, please make sure this laptop is 100% Linux compatible.

When I tried Ubuntu on my E6400 (see signature for specs), it was horrible. My battery life passed from 9 hours down to 3 hours. Fan full speed all the time, choppy mouse, no wireless, the fonts where abysmal, not to mention that Linux xWindows font rendering is already terrible compared to Win7 it doesn't help.

Ouch 15inch with such low screen resolution... wow...
No, 1440x900 is ideal for 14inch systems. Text is sharp, and easy to read, and the work space gain makes it ideal for a multi-tasker as yourself. I program myself (http://www.nvgpupro.com), and I can tell you that it's very easy to read text, even at a distance from the laptop, the screen.

I am a student at univeristy and I do type quiet a bit of notes on my laptop (I use OneNote 2010, great program - I don't like 2007 version)

I don't know which one works with Linux and which don't, but if you call to order you can negotiate a price and free upgrades...

"WiMAX" means internet on the go, meaning you get a data plan with a cellphone provider and you have the internet where a cellphone has one, at cellphone speed. If you do filed work in development areas, then it could be interesting.

The 6300 is the real wireless N, as people call it, as it allows dual band communication with the router (of course the router needs to support it, else it goes to single band and it's like if you took to 6200).

I would go with Intel Wireless card because I don't want to have fun with Dell own drivers. But again, I have no clue on linux support. Might best to see under a Linux forum.

No... the only investment would have been in the 6510.

As I said a while back, after looking at both, I decided the 6410 was more than what I needed. Mostly the weight difference caught my attention. I was surprised 6410's weight.

When comparing the 65 to the 64 I was not able to turn them one so I can't comment in the screen difference with them sitting side by side... the weight alone got me though. I'm sure with the max screen on the 6510 (1080) would be very nice movie watching... 6410 is more than okay when considering the size and fact I'd WANT to break this out to watch a movie. My old inspiron was heavy.

All, do you suspect that Dell will eventually offer core i7 quad on the E6410? I like the 6410 form factor vs. the larger 6510, the only thing preventing me from pulling the trigger is the lack of quad core. Any "inside info" out there from the gurus on Dell's product development roadmap?

    Thanks,

    Brian

Core i's are already big heaters. If you want Quad Core it might be best to wait for Gen 2 of the Core i7.

Just out of curiosity (I couldn't seem to find anything in this thread) - has anyone heard reports of the throttling issue on the E6410 or has that been resolved?

Hi All, first post newbie here...

I'm in the market for my very first laptop (been using Dell workstations for
ages) and have been reading with great interest all the posts regarding the
E6410 which I've narrowed everything down to.

I have a question regarding the price. I need the laptop for the end of
August and I'm wondering what will happen to the price between now and
then ? Is it low now as an introductory price and will rise shortly, or will the
price fall because prices normally do ?

One thing that has me worried is the news that if I wait much longer I may
not receive the Windows 7 64bit installation disc, which I really need. It is
currently still an option in the online configuration program and I'd hate to
    lose out on it.

Thanks to all that have written so far on this machine, it's been a great read.

Judging by the E6400's price changes (or lack thereof) during its life the E6410 UK pricing is likely to remain stable. You will just get slowly improving hardware specs.

If you want the E6410 at a good price then you need to watch Dell Outlet or the people such as itcsales who resell the outlet stock. The new models aren't there yet, but I would expect that they show up soon.

    Thanks John.

What do you think are the chances the E6410 will get USB3 ports in the near
future ? I just read that a Precision laptop has them but they were disabled in
the bios, so Dell must be close to putting them into production. I plan on
keeping my machine as long as possible so some compatibility with the future
would be nice. I just read that "Intel will not support USB 3.0 until 2011", not
sure if this has any bearing on the matter.

The E6410 will probably not get USB 3.0 ever. You'll have to wait for the next revision. I've only read the first 20 pages of this thread, I was hoping to find a dedicated post or link with a comprehensive review since it seems like many questions have been asked repeatedly without varied testing (such as the above question regarding nVidia and battery life).
