Interesting - I had read that the 9-cell m1330 and 6-cell e6410 were roughly the same weight, so to hear the latter is substantially heaver is quite concerning! An independent weigh-in would definitely be interesting.

What is it about the typing you're unsatisfied about? I also would have figured the e6410 would have a better keyboard.

    Bizarre. Definitely something odd there!

    Thanks for your response :)

    E6410 with 6cell 2.225 KG
    M1330 with 9cell 1.9kg

and from just the first run with the E6410 I get the same battery usage as I do with M1330 but the 1330 battery is a cheap ebay one and a year old!

I'll type on both keyboards properly today and see if i can pin point whats what.. But typing on the M1330 now feels crips but the E6410 was a bit softer maybe...

    TBC.....

Ok so it is a fair bit heavier, but I suppose it is larger too and more rigid which I guess accounts for that. Looking forward to hearing more!

It wont be anything good.... Dell has just left after fitting the replacement screen and they have fitted a faulty one! It has massive lines through it. They told me they have ordered another one for tomorrow, but couldn't not put me back to the original one before then. So Im now with an unworkable laptop! Cheers Dell! (on phone to customer services now)

    I don't get it..
So the technician installs the new screen in front of you, and left without testing? I got something life you (several stuck pixels, was my issue on the replacement), and the technician himself called Dell ordered a new monitor, and asked me if I wanted to have the old one (which worked better). I said yes, he switch and took the more broken new one with him.

That's useful information although I wonder if your scales read a bit low. My E6400 with 6 cell battery weighs 2.32kg and I doubt if Dell have managed to shave 0.1kg off the weight during the refresh. However, the weight difference still applies.

In terms of size, the M1330's equivalent is the E43x0, which has a similar weight to the M1330 (my E4300 is ~1.76kg with 6 cell battery), but this model doesn't offer dedicated graphics.

Almost. He fits the new screen, tests it and finds it doesn't work. He calls dell and orders a replacement for tomorrow. He then tells me that as they only contract for Dell they have strict rules they have to follow and can't swap them back as he needs to send the screen away as proof its been fitted. I wasn't happy with this but he assured me I would be the first call of the day tomorrow so I put up with it....

I have since been informed that dell have no UK stock of these screens at all and there would be a lead time of 3-14days!!!!!!!! I have been on to our account manager and played hell. They're going to order a new one for me and sort something else out as a good will gesture! Still not happy.

As far as the scales being a bit out, they may well be, but the difference between the two laptops will still apply. Bit fed up now with Dell.

So far, it all sounds quite plausible. Personally, I'm pleasantly surprised that a slightly yellow-ish display elicited such immediate action on the part of Dell. On-site service? Yes, I do have to wonder if the extra cost display, which has some sort of guarantee, is the reason why you're seeing this level of service?

Sorry about the spot of bother, but sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. Actually, from your initial photos, I was impressed by the bright display on you E6410 - and how dull and blue-ish your old M1330 looked in comparison. As I recollect, the M1330 had a fairly bright display when it was new.

Anyway, I'm quite amazed that Dell dispatched a service tech, contract worker or not, for an ambiguous aesthetic problem. After all, we live in an era when retailers won't do anything about entirely unambiguous issues, such as the occasional dead pixel.

Blighty is an island and you do have fairly new, high end business notebook, with a fairly rare optional display, so all considered, it isn't a surprise that there isn't a second spare on hand.

My condolences. I'm also an nVidia victim. Personally, I will swear uphill and down that Intel has best GUI for adjusting graphic properties, least problematic graphics drivers and has never done me wrong, either in terms of processors or integrated graphics. I've got nothing negative to say about AMD, although I also had a negative experience with ATI - dreadful GUI and an insoluble issue that might have been related to the discrete ATI GPU.

Well my main reason for sticking to nVidia is that their Linux drivers are a lot better than ATI's, and Intel isn't fast enough for my purposes. It's quite disappointing to see so many manufacturers turning entirely to ATI now!

The E6410 may well be one of the last Dell laptops to have an nVidia chipset inside...
