Yup I agree with abbove, Your XPS screen is too blue, your E6400 is too yellow. It's really hard to get real white with TN panels, that's a fact.
You can call Dell and have your monitor replaced... hopefully it will be a diferent brand and get less yellow. But don't expact pure white... never with a TN panel (IPS and PVA panels can't be used in laptop as they are much thicker, and draws a lot more power).

    Thanks for all the replies.

I agree the XPS is a bit on the blue side, but that's never really been an issue as it still gives very clear and crisp images. The yellowish colour of the new E6410 is horrible, it's distracting to look at and is depressing!

I understand that its near impossible to get perfect whites on laptops, but I think that yellow isn't close enough! lol

    The hardware ID is LGD0257 - Its the WXGA+ Anti-Glare LED 1440x900 screen with the NVIDIA® NVS 3100M 512MB gDDR3.

Is there a panel anyone can personally recommend and I'll get Dell to ship me that. We have a corporate account with them and generally get what we ask for.

If Im honest, I hadn't looked at the Nvida control panel, so thanks for pointing that out to me. I've just started to have a play with that and am now wishing there was a reset to defaults option! lol

    Thanks again, Shaun

That's an LG display. They are usually among the best and would be the brand I would have suggested. My E6400 has a very nice LG_Philips (LPL0140) display.

    I think the defaults were
    brightness +50%
    contrast +50%
    gamma 1.0

    in all channels.

maybe you can get/borrow a colorimeter to check if it`s possible to get the screen in the right way, BUT software calibration is also always a loss in quality (in comparision to real hardware calibration). So maybe your screen easily is not normal working and it`s better to ask Dell for a replacement.

I`m not sure maybe someone here has an LG Panel and can comment on the Quality. My AUO is ok, but normally I`d prefer a LG (thinking of the different E6400 Panels, the LG seemed to be the best).

    Well, I certainly don't NEED more than 4GB. :)

But I do use it for heavy database development work, and frequently need to use virtual machines for development in versions which are not compatible with Vista/Win7.

And if it go to the point where 4GB DIMMs were around $125 or so each I would just buy two just in case it would help. But I think for now I will just go with 2x2GB and call it a day... that's what my current machine has and it's certainly never caused low memory issues or anything like that, even with a couple virtual machines running.

Today, my E6410 (i7, 4Gb, nVidia, etc.) has started to freeze randomly. When it freezes, I have to hold the power button to turn if off and then turn it back on. Most of the time, it freezes again on the Windows 7 login screen. I am very disappointed. I doubt it is a driver problem, I have the latest versions of all the drivers.

I will most likely call Dell and return them the machine. :(

So I guess Dell did not test the i7 model on the E6410/E6510..
So it's the i5 or freezing problem, as it seams.

What do you mean? The same issue happened to other people on this thread?

I have E6510 (specs in sig. w/W7 Ultimate x64) and it started freezing at least once or twice a day, ESPECIALLY when I was playing WoW. Before installing WoW, I don't think it froze once. But after that, I had a couple of other instances when system froze 100% while browsing the web, chatting on Windows Live Messenger, and system was idle overnight. Since uninstalling WoW today, I haven't experienced any problem so far. I was on a trial account anyways, so not being able to play it for now is not a big problem for me.

I talked to Dell a few times (they don't think it's their hardware problem and I don't think so either after running full diagnostics twice) and talked to Microsoft three times. MS is only suspecting there could be some issues with drivers, but they can't find out anything clear.

I have another 3-yr old Inspiron E1505 with W7 Ultimate x64 as well, and it didn't have any problems before. Now I tried WoW on that machine for the first time, guess what, the system froze.

Weird. That system has ATI x1400 mobility radeon, so graphic card manufacturers are obviously different from my 10-day old Latitude.

Anyways, even if this might not be a hardware problem, I still don't think I should be spending so much time fixing issues on my new computer - diagnostics, clean installs of OS, talking to tech support, etc. Other than freezing, I'm darn happy with my laptop. I'll wait for a week or so and observe the system and decide whether to request a replacement laptop. Seriously, there are only few of us who are having this problem???
