actually i would love if i could get the fan to go full power. i dont care about the noise. theres no way to change those settings that i know of; the secret menu doesnt work on this laptop.

my keyboard also has a ton of flex. i'm hoping the replacement kb they are sending me fixes that.

 

It does appear that in everyday use, these new CPUs aren't matching the power efficiency of the P series Core 2s. What happened, for example, to SLFM. 800MHz is plenty fast enough for light usage. At the end of my work yesterday my P8600's two cores were running at 30 and 35C respectively.

Some times the flexing is due that the keyboard is not perfect flat, and is curved upwards. Make sure that your replacement keyboard is flexed downward or at least perfectly flat, you can bend it a bit, but be careful not to break the keyboard or deform it.

Dell should tight-up their quality control on other companies that makes parts for them. As it's clear that they try to cut on quality to maximize profits from their contract with Dell. If only Logitech would make laptop keyboards... they would be truly awesome - I love my Logitech illuminated keyboard.

 

You are correct John, But the Core 2 Duo was guilty of the same thing, so did the AMD Turion, and other AMD's laptop CPU's. First generation are always power hungry and outputs a lot of heat, later generation will improve on that.
Your P9000 series is the latest model from Intel. I live my P8400 in my case, like you 800Mhz is plenty enough of speed when I use my laptop at school.

As my battery is now old, I have few hours left (about 3 hours when pushing it to save battery - with wireless ON), what I do is double click on a Nvidia overclock profile, which has the value to downlock it at minimum speed (a bit lower than powermizer technology put my GPU), and ensure it stays at the minimum speed no mater what, then load default profile when I need normal power or plug-in (it gives me a few more minutes of battery life).
I wish something like that was possible for CPU's, that would help a lot.

 

There has been a new touchpad driver available for 2 days, here's the changelog from Dell's website:

- Significant Palm Rejection (TouchCheck) Improvements:
- Improved performance by requiring the cursor to move a certain distance before taps are re-enabled after typing
- TouchCheck now inhibits all input (taps, cursor movement, scrolling, gestures) while typing
- Changed the timeout range of TouchCheck function

- Improved sensitivity for all systems

- Resolved issue where double click is accidentally detected if a finger touches both the stick button and touchpad at the same time

Thanks fot the notice. I installed them a hour ago and as much as I can say after these short time: they seem to be much better than the old version! The touchpad feels a bit snappier now. And I can leave Touchcheck uncheked (it`s pretty useless to me because I cannot use the hand-move-tool in Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign the right way when it?s on) without having some strange behaviours(, yet).

Also the Multitouch Gestures seem to work a bit better (but still far away from good to use). Scrolling is near to be useable.

Does GPU underclocking work for the 3100m on the E6410?

 

I didn't have the time to test it. I will make some battery test over the weekend and post some numbers on monday.
