Try the Patriot 4GB on Amazon that I posted, it's only $20.99 (should be cheaper than Best Buy, especially since there's no sales tax until 9/15).

Any SSD that uses SandForce controllers will not be compatible. Dell OEM SSDs are made by Samsung, and they use their own controller, so I would recommend the PM810 or PM830 (I've used both in my E6410).

Think I'm just going to go with what's working for you vs. trying to reinvent the wheel. If anyone is interested, these PM830 256 GB SSD is only $223 on Amazon! That includes the transfer kit and software. Not bad!

Thanks for starting up this forum and all the great advice!!

That's a pretty good price for the PM830, considering that it was over $500 not too long ago...

Got my patriot modules and Samsung SSD in this afternoon... so far no BSOD after installing the Patriot 8GB of RAM, but I haven't been in my dock with my external monitors yet...

Hopefully will be able to install my Samsung 830 SSD tonight.

I'll keep you posted on how these work for me.

    :)

Ugh. Why does this kind of stuff always happen to me?

Did you do a fresh OS install on your Samsung 830 SSD, or did you try to clone the HDD?

I tried cloning the HDD (there were three partitions: Dell, Recovery, and OS/C: ). Thinking that I would only need the OS, that's the only part I cloned (assuming recovery is built in safeguard in case you need to go back to factory settings, and you can't clone the Dell part according to the norton ghost software).

When I popped in the SSD I got the message that the "BOOTMGR is missing."

Doing some digging around on the web, but no real definintive direction yet on how I should tackle this problem.

    Any ideas?

I have a standard image that I just re-deployed on the SSD. Cloning doesn't always work, but you can try to perform startup repair using the Windows 7 installation disk, which should fix the issue. However, if you're using the factory image, I would recommend cloning everything.

After you move everything to the SSD, make sure that Intel Rapid Storage Technology isn't installed. It decreases performance and may interfere with TRIM.

Hmmm... Norton ghost won't allow me to clone the RECOVERY or DELL to the SSD, so my next idea was to just do a backup of the entire drive to my NAS and then restore it. Trying this method:
SSD Migration Made Easy In Windows 7 | Lifehacker Australia (except that I'm using the one time backup feature in norton ghost)

Is that along the lines of what you've done?

I have a Symantec System Recovery image that I just deployed to C:\. Since you have Norton Ghost, make a backup of your old HDD and restore it to the SSD (make sure you mark the partition as active and don't copy the MBR).

Even better, reinstall Windows altogether...a clean copy of Windows 7 will make your laptop run even faster. ;)

Just curious why you think SandForce-based SSD's are incompatible? I'm not advocating one brand / type over another, but I have a Vertex 2 in my E6410 and it has been a flawless experience so far (about a year).

Also, Crucial SSD's aren't based on SandForce...
