I have a 100% repro using the step above. How did they fix it in your case? Did they change the screen?

I have had every part of the laptop replaced twice, other than the battery (all the big parts and misc. like the screen cover) and it never was fixed. I dealt with this problem starting in 2011, and here is what I know:

I could not identify if it was the motherboard/gpu or screen. The problem can't be reproduced on an external screen, so that points to internal monitor only. However, it is not a backlight flicker (tested with light sensor) and it gets worse when you drop the refresh rate to 40Hz, which points to the GPU/motherboard as LCDs are solid state. But absolutely everything got changed multiple times and I don't think they could have that many defective parts.

It is definitely a hardware issue. Mine was fixed by a replacement only (entire new computer, with lots of upgrades too); no depot repair ever solved the problem. The reason I got a replacement was because I complained and had gotten 5 repairs before on the issue. Your system should still be under warranty so definitely contact support (I suggest email, you don't have to spend 1hr on the phone) and they should give you depot dispatch (unless you have onsite warranty, then use that). If its not fixed the first time, call them and see if you can get onsite as if the technician can't fix it, a replacement will be dispatched and overnighted to you. Who knows, you might even get an E6420.

Is it only happening when the laptop is plugged in? I get a bit of buzzing but not horrible. If I use my old D series power supply it is a lot worse.

This sounds odd. Is your heatpipe working? If there is any difference in temperature along the CPU/Chipset heatpipe at all then it is broken/defective. You should be able to Prime95 it and not have it throttle.

Just an update but BIOS A12 fixed this issue for me. My laptop now never hangs when waking up from sleep. Was on A11 before. Others are reporting the same thing in the Dell Community thread above. Even dell exhausted themselves through support channels and I was about to send in my laptop!

The fix is not listed in bios update but many firmware pieces were updated in the A12 Bios Package

Anyone have a problem installing 8GB RAM (2X4) in E6410? I have i5 and was trying to upgrade to 8GB from 4GB, but when I installed I started getting BSOD! Also, my multi-monitors (running off external USB graphics card, 3 of them) would randomly go blank and I'd have to "swipe the black screen" away with the mouse cursor to see my screen again. Very strange. Tried making sure I had latest BIOS (now have A12), and that the driver for my external graphics cards were updated as well. Eventually gave up and took 2 different sets of memory back (stuff off the shelf at bestbuy). Even posted on intel forum and found out they might release a new driver soon, but dont think thats happened yet...Not sure if ordering the memory from dell would make a difference, but I'd really like to have the extra memory on board if possible. Any ideas???

Oh, suppose I should also mention I'm running the intel integrated graphics, and that I'm on windows 7 pro 64-bit

Good question. It was off the shelf at Best Buy. Believe one was Corsair, but I can't remember the other brand.

Was thinking today of purchasing 256 m4 SSD and 2x4 memory from Crucial.com. They guarantee their stuff to be compatible and thought that might be a powerful one-two punch to help speed up my system.

I'd be out the door with a data transfer kit for around $260. Think that would be a wise move?

I just posted with having almost the exact same issue. Did you ever resolve yours? I gave up and took my memory back, but I really need to speed things up so I'm willing to try this again.
