Yikes, that is why I always do parts-only dispatches. ;) Good to hear it's better now, after it breaks in, it should be even better.

Would certainly be nice. :) I really wish I'd taken a photo so I could email it to Dell...I'm wondering it the mountain of paste on the CPU was affecting the contact of the heatsink with the GPU....although both temperatures are now better so it was probably a combination of things.

Having a B.Eng in Computer Engineering and seeing crappy workmanship like this really gets on my nerves. ;) I too would've preferred a parts only dispatch, but Dell don't like doing that here (Australia) for some reason. They've done it for me once (optical drive on another machine), but when I needed a new keyboard and palm rest for this machine they wouldn't do it (I don't think the guy understood what I meant, he barely spoke English...so I just gave up).

I'm noticing now that the machine feels cooler on the bottom too, which is good so hopefully it won't roast my vegetables as much as it did previously on my morning commute. :)

when you do parts-only dispatches, do you have to send back the broken parts to dell?

Depending on the part, but usually it's required and they include a return label in the box.

Yes you need to return all FRU parts. The only exception I can think of it is HDD if you have Keep HDD service. Only manufacturer I can think of that doesn't want FRU parts back is Acer (they don't require keyboards back).

Like I said, it depends on the part. There are several that I know do not require a return, but I'm not going to list them here for obvious reasons. Generally speaking, items that exceed the value of ground shipping will require a return.
