E6410 Owner's Thread

Thanks to EVERYONE for their input and thoughts regarding the E6410. This has been a tremendous resource for me as I consider replacing my D630 and I sincerely appreciate everyone's help.

Speaking of which, I was wondering whether the SSDs for the E6410 support TRIM? I'm honestly not that familiar with TRIM but I have read that it can be pretty important in the long run? I'm also open to any thoughts re. TRIM if anyone has any. I'm definitely going to order a laptop with SSD so this is an important point for me.

Any recent SSD should have TRIM. They are too many SSD's to list.. you will have to look it up on the drive that interest you. Of course, you need to use Windows 7 (make sure it's the 64-bit version when you order to take full advantage of your system)

 

I currently have an XPS m1210 and am looking for a replacement - the E6410 and T410 are on my short-list. How do the screens compare? I've heard the T410 has a mediocre screen, is the screen on the E6410 better?

 

I have read many different forums (for different laptops) that say that many new drives with new system builds are NOT TRIM supported, which is why I asked the question. Is it actually safe to assume that the E6410 SSDs are all TRIM supported? I plan to use Win7 64-Bit so that shouldn't be an issue.

It depends on the date of the forum.
It's best to ask, and check with the company. Some company has made firmware updates for select models (usually the high end ones), other put it on their new models only.
Don't assume, check.
Look at brands like Corsair, OCZ, Kingston, they should have TRIM ready drives.

 

Why don`t you buy one for yourself? For the money Dell takes you`d get a good midrange SSD (Intel SSD Postville or if you have time to wait a bit and read some reviews one with the new Sandforce Controller).

I have no idea which SSDs Dell puts in the Latitude, propaply Samsungs, the only advantage you get is the 3 year on site service instead 3 year bring in (if you chose the Intel SSD).

My Intel (80GB) arrived a few days ago and now waits for the E6410 :/. I`ll put the 320GB HDD which comes with my Latitude in a caddy for the DVD drive slot. So I get speed and storage.

 

Say what now? Are you saying you can fit a HDD in a caddy in the DVD bay and have a HDD and an SSD fitted at the same time?

in the D series there was a HDD module for the media bay and I guess there is one for the E series also; or am I wrong?

 

This is by far the best option. Get one from NewEgg, that way you know exactly: 1) How much power it uses, 2) TRIM support (or not), and 3) throughput rates. And it should be cheaper too.

Buying directly from an OEM, they make NO representations or guarantees you will get any particular feature or brand of SDD, only that it is SDD.

 

You are right -- there is a media bay caddy for HDDs.

However, the one from Dell only fits a 1.8'' HDD, which is slower and has smaller capacity than the typical 2.5'' HDD format for notebook PCs.

There is a website selling 2.5'' HDD caddys for the E6400 which should fit just fine for the E6410, since the optical drives are interchangeable.

EDIT -- The website I mentioned says that the caddy is for E6400, E6410, E6500 and E6510 (no clue why the Precision M4400 is not there), so it definitely can be used for your purposes.
