Hi everyone!

Could someone with the dedicated graphics and the normal (6cell) battery comment on battery life for office work (Word or OneNote with screen brightness low and battery saving mode, wireless off). I would like to take notes during class with this notebook and somewhere around 5 hours would be good.

Also - does anyone know wheter you could switch off the dedicated graphics somewhere to save on battery life further?

You can't. But the GPU has something called PowerMizer, a technology from Nvidia, that is like Intel's SpeedStep for the CPU, where the GPU goes under minimum speed to really cut down on power consumption. The GPU will increase speed when your using more the GPU. Also, on battery it will try it's best to stay under minimal speed. While not perfect, the GPU consumes much less power (few watts) than what if it was going at full speed (14W).

 

I can say that my E6400 gets around 5 hours with a 6-cell battery. The newer E6410 has a more powerful GPU but its power consumption is similar, so you should get 5 hours too.

How do the Nvidia and the Intel integrated GPU's compare with respect to heat load and power consumption (i.e, is the Intel solution still less than that of the Nvidia or are they now comparable)?

The Intel integrated GPU consumes less power than the Nvidia, even when idle. In the E6400 we owners came to the conclusion that the Intel GPU would give you about 20% more battery run-time (5 hours vs. 6 hours on a 6-cell). I suppose this is pretty similar with the newer generation of cards, perhaps even less difference since the NVS 3100M is a 40 nm GPU.

 

Touchpad works much better than the 6400. It also comes with multifinger gestures, they seem to work very well.

 

In case anyone wanted to know....

E6410 base price went down a few bucks today so they could say base price is $999, but Dell also dropped the starting wireless card to a Dell 1501. The cost to upgrade the wireless card is now more expensive, so that if you go up to the Intel 6200, you're actually paying $5 more than last week's arrangement.

Anyone else see any other changes?

I have two questions:

First, can someone of the E6410-owners confirm the battery life of around 5 hours (for office-work) with dedicated graphics and 6-cell battery proposed by the E6400-owners?

Second, what is your impression on fan-noise during office-work? Is the fan on constantly or does it just start up under load? Would you describe it as annoying in a very quiet environment like in the library?

These points would be very important for me, as I would use this notebook mainly for taking notes during class and for writing papers in the library.
