So i re-installed windows 7 and ran the firmware update even though I'm pretty sure it was already running the same version, and no change in windows 8. I can enroll fingerprints just fine in windows 7 though.

    Thanks for the help CuterKiller..

I still have problem with the bluetooth and Wifi.
Can't switch between wireless AP's, when i try to switch them the wifi card gets disabled and can't enable again, till I restart my computer.

    My wireless driver date 1/22/2012
    Driver version 14.3.2.1

    2. where to find the bluetooth settings?
I can't add any bluetooth devices.
or how to turn on and off the bluetooth by software.

    3. how to switch off the pointing device which is inbetween the keyboard.
Which does a click when i glide my fingers over that. I Like to disable atleast the click feature.

    4. Still i can't find a way to use the fn key + d to switch off my display. or fn key+ z to reset my fan.
or Fn Key + F2 to switch off the charging of my battery.
But Fn Key + right arrow turns on and off my backlight keyboard.

    Thanks for the help.

I've had the same problem happen to me as well, but very rarely. When i press Shut Down it would turn off the screen, but the Power button LED and the Scroll Lock button is still on and it stays like that. Most likely a program is still running and its not letting my laptop shut down. Either that or theres a sign the PSU is failing ...

since it only happens randomly, its a bit hard to diagnose, but i'll try to figure it out...

    Windows 7 SP1 32bit
    Dell Latitude E6400 Laptop
    Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 @ 2.4 GHz, 2GB RAM
Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset
    Intel Wifi/Ethernet drivers

PS: thinking of installing windows 8 on this laptop too xD But dell won't release official drivers for the E6400 :(

If you guys could give me a few tips of getting the right drivers that'll be great. Thanks in advance.

since windows 7 is working fine, most likely ill install windows 8 on a separate partition and dual boot..loving the metro design xD

    @ CuterKiller,

nope just a regular HDD. But like i said before its most likely a PSU problem or theres a program running in the background refusing to shutdown. Does it always happen with a clean install of Windows (no 3rd party software)? If so, check your PSU

By PSU do you mean the power adapter brick? I have both the official 65 and 130 watt versions and the problem happens with either.

The problem happens in all scenarios. When docked and on power, when undocked and on power, and when just running on battery.

I suspected the Intel 520 SSD hard drive because when I put in a regular WD hard drive I could not reproduce the problem.

If I check the windows administrative logs after one of these events, I don't see anything that looks obviously suspicious.

When I have more time, I will test out a clean install on the intel drive to rule out software. But if it was software wouldn't I see something in the logs right now?

You could also check the battery. My suggestion would be to try another battery if possible first. Then if the problem persists, Re-install windows 7 without any 3rd party programs and try.

Its hard to say.. event viewer logs aren't very reliable..

EDIT: If you do a clean install of windows 7, make sure all drivers are functional ie. No errors in Device Manager. faulty drivers are known to cause related problems

I have two batteries, one that I use more often than the other, but I will try that

Yo cute, how about backing up your Intel and imaging the mechanical to your Intel ssd. Just for the sake that your mechanical doesn't experience these issues but the ssd does. So it'll be near a relative constant before you go all reinstall mode.

Tried with extended battery, still suffering from the issue.

I'm going to try this, but won't have time for another 2-3 weeks.
