Ok, I got my e6400 today and I've been torturing it to see if I can replicate the throttling, but so far, I haven't been able to. I have 2 orthos (stress prime) tests running right now, a dvd playing, and I was also running google earth. Speedfan shows the following readings:

    GPU: 82C
    HD0: 42C
    Temp1: 51C
    Core0: 76C
    Core1: 78C

I managed to get the GPU up to 94C by really hammering google earth with all the other stuff running at the same time.

With the DPI Latency checker, I have seen some red bars, but I have not noticed any slowdowns. During the heaviest activity, I did make the frames skip some on the DVD, but remember, this is with *2* orthos tests running so in normal use I doubt it would happen.

Also, I have checked the event log but I don't have a single event ID 7. I'm looking under System Tools/Event Viewer/Windows Logs/System, as I assume these would be system events.

Anyway, the orthos tests have been running for 55 minutes, so I figure if I haven't seen throttling by now I'm probably not going to.

If anyone has any other tests they'd like me to try, please reply. I think this laptop seems to be fine so far and doesn't have the throttling. Oh yeah, I believe the BIOS version is A14.

    Yup, normal.

    100% normal for a laptop.

Congrats on your system. I read so many post that I forget what people hardware they have. I believe you have the Nvidia GPU solution, like me, because you don't have the issue, correct? And very nice to know that you run the T series Core2Duo and the system can handle everything without any problem.

Great to hear! However, I do find it odd that you dont have any event 7s at all. Mine has several, although slowdown wasn't actually noticed... EDIT UPDATE: I actually think you may be looking under the wrong area. Go to the start menu/search "event viewer" and run program/Click Event Viewer(On the top left once you are running the program)/Click the "+" next to "warning" under summary of administrative events. Then sort by event ID and look for event ID 7.

Goodbytes, I know you havent experienced thottling... Do you have any event 7s at all?

Yes, I am very happy so far. I was really dreading having to send this thing back and getting a T400 with that awful keyboard layout (CTRL/FN key swapped) , and plus spending an extra $300-400. But I was probably going to do it if I had overheating issues with the e6400.

I just went into event viewer and did a "Find", and I checked every event type (Information, Warning, Error, Success Audit, Failure Audit) and I put in Event ID 7 but nothing came back. So I don't think I have any event 7's. I just clean installed XP (I already had a license so I didn't buy the downgrade from dell since it would have just been a waste of $) so I think the Vista interface might differ a bit. I believe you said you are running Vista 64.

Goodbytes, yes, I have the NVidia. I'm very glad I got that instead of the Intel. The NVidia seems to handle whatever I throw at it with no problems :).

Actually, I looked under Vista 64-bit and Win7 RC 64-bit and I see no Code 7 error at any point. My system is set to AHCI. Power option does not change anything.
The lowest number I have is code 12 in Vista, because I pulles out the optical drive, without ejecting it from 'Safely remove hardware'.

Here is a list of all my devices and driver version for Vista 64-bit:
    http://page.infinit.net/eps/driverslist.html
Generated with Everest... yif you have the program you can compare.
Note: "isatap" is actually VirtualBox/VirtualPC 2007 network drivers if I am not mistaken. So ignore that...

I used to have the throttling problem. Temperatures are within normal range, yet the CPU just throttles for no apparent reason. And nope it's not a software issue.

Had it settled with Dell replacing both my chip (P8400) and motherboard. And I run on the Intel UMA base, not the NVIDIA.

This is driving me nuts! I'm currently running a google earth tour (driving directions tour that will go for about 2 hours) a full flash movie on youtube (~2 Hours) and a 45min iTunes TV show and its running flawless.... Few skipped frames on the itUens video but that is expected with running all of that.... CPU usage 75-100%.. fans have been on high for awhile...yet no signs of slowdown.... But yet it seems I get an "event 7" quite a bit..... but now i'm running all this... and NO event 7 yet...

Can you show me a screen shot of the error code 7 of the event viewer (I want to see all the details).
Did you compare my driver list version that I posted above, with yours (look under Everest at "Devices" > "Windows Devices"), I am wondering if there is a driver conflict somewhere.

I don't have everest, so I can't compare that... I looked through the details of the event 7 and the only details (other than date/time/computer name) says "Execution: ProcessID:4 Thread: (varies)" I looked on resource monitor and PID 4 is "system"

Also, random question, would using SpeedFan do anything to the warranty on the laptop, since it is a utility to adjust fan speeds and such?

No problem as your system have emergency shutdown system put in place if overheating occurs... of course if it fails then well your screwed. As long as Dell doesn't know... the better it is for you. Also, it is illegal for Dell to look trough your data.
