    off topic question -- the laptop I ordered comes with 2 MB RAM from Dell (one slot). I ordered a second stick from Newegg for $20 (CORSAIR ValueSelect 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model VS2GSDS667D2 - Retail). Seems way cheaper than paying an extra $75 to Dell for essentially the same thing. But since y'all are experts, will I be fine with a "mismatched" pair of RAM, since I think they're essentially the same?

    return it...

    you need an 800mhz ram... since the 1st one is 800

    otherwise, getting a 667mhz ram would down clock the existing 800 to 667 - which in turn shall be under utilize

    Same timings are important too. If you mix one stick of 800MHz with 4-4-4-12 and other 800MHz stick at 5-5-5-15, it won't be pretty.

    No problem. The BIOS interrogates the SPD data and uses the slower timings.

    However, I haven't seen any 4-4-4-12 at 800MHz. I attach the timings for the OCZ module. The RAM that came in my E6400 (2 x 1GB in August 08) had timings of 5-6-6-18-24 and worked happily alongside the OCZ module.

    Now I'm confused. Should I test my RAM when the laptop arrives and then order a module that matches the timings? Or does it not seem to matter as long as it is 800MHz?

    Oh this is fantastic! So, if I don't like touch/feel/flex of backlit keyboard, I can always replace it with non-backlit standard keyboard.

    Does anyone have any idea how to get Dell to send me a non-backlit keyboard as a separate accessory (for free)? I am going to order E6400 from outlet (with backlit keyboard, most likely) but I'd like Dell to send me a non-backlit keyboard as an extra accessory.
