does the second drive have to be SATA or can it be IDE/PATA? Not sure if the 22 pin interposer will also attach to an IDE drive. My gut instinct is that it will not but want to be sure before I purchase.

The interposer that comes on existing drives is only for SATA. I doubt they make one for PATA.

FYI, I just got off the phone with Dell Spare Parts, and get this...for all the parts needed--carrier, interposer, and screws, I was quoted $117.89!! They actually wanted to charge me $10.99 PER SCREW!!!!! He double-checked, and verified the screws were $10.99 each! Holy cow!

In any case, I did not order the screws...I have plenty of extra Dell screws...

Also, the carriers and interposer are BACKORDERED. :(

I actually have a completely different experience

i had read this post before i called dell (UK).

after going through the same stuff ie. being transferred to different people i was given a few numbers of places that dealt with dell parts. nobody even knew what xk231 and c7586 were. tried to explain but they didnt know that dell had a model called vostro 1700 or inspiron 1720. most deal in legacy parts. one knew what i was talking about but didnt have any in stock.

so called dell again (technical support this time). after giving the service tag etc was asked what the problem was. told the guy this laptop i bought has an option for a second hard drive and i have bought a second hard drive but how do i connect it to the laptop it didn't come with a connector or a cage.

after explaining for 5 min what that connector does he put me on hold and came back with a suggestion that i return the hard drive where i bought it from and buy one from dell. will that come with the connector etc i asked. on hold for another couple of min and was told no. so how do you suppose i will connect that i asked. on hold for another 2 min he came back with another solution, aparently he spoke to somebody and they think they have something that might fit in my laptop and if i want he can ship them out to me. i said why not its worth a try.

well got the delivery today and when i opened it i was pleased to see two boxes labelled DLC-C7586 and DLC-XK231.
couldn't ask for anything else (well actually there were no screws)
called technical support again and a "full set" of vostro 1700 screws is on my way.
there is no charge for any of the parts
so calling technical support is the way to go

I ordered the interposer and caddy today from Dell without the screws. They do want $10 a piece for the screws - pathetic!!

FYI I found that they sent me them free when I opened it up to replace my HD with a faster, larger one and "found" all the factory installed screws to be completely stripped and unable to be reused. Ironically when I called to do this, the first time they only sent me the 4 screws that hold in the HD, so then they sent me a full caddy (which of course I'd already bought, sigh) with only those 4 screws again and then finally they sent me the correct missing ones.

FYI if you get the screws elsewhere or "find" yours stripped also you need to make sure to get 4 M3 x 3-mm (holds HD to caddy) and 3 M2.5 x 5-mm screws (holds caddy to laptop).

If anyone is looking for the screws then try and get them from Dell Canada where they "only" charge $1 each.
