EDIT: Hard Drive Caddy for secondary HD on Vostro 1700 is part number C7586 and can be purchased from Dell for $10.99 (parts department 800-357-3355 ext. 72 69938)

So I was thinking of installing a second hard drive on my Vostro 1700 since Dell offered it as an option. Before I go disassembling everything to figure out where and how to install the hard drive I thought it would be easier to use the dell install diagrams if there were any yet. Does anyone know where they are or is better able to search support.dell.com than I am?

I've disassembled my fair share of laptops for fun and profit but I'm past the point of enjoying it for the sheer sake of exploration.

Im looking to swap out my 160gb 5200rpm drive for 2 160gb 7200.2's

But you will need the caddy for the second drive.

Ugh way to be a buzzkill datamonkey :-(

That blows. glad you told me though, I was about to buy a 160gb 7200rpm drive. Now we have to figure out how to get the caddy or wait for some eager ebayer to start selling them.

Has anyone called Dell and asked for the part number and a price for the caddy?

I was going to but they're not open now. Techsupport chat told me: "The number to the parts department is 1-800-357-3355 ext. 72 69938."

im not even going to attempt to call dell again, here in the uk their support is crap, take a good 40 mins to get through, and then get cut off.

internal hard drive caddy is $10.99 from Dell and the part number is C7586. According to the person I spoke to there are different caddies for the primary drive and the secondary. That sounded like BS to me but who knows (she didn't seem very knowledge on what we were actually talking about).

You guys are lucky, I would love to have two 160 GB ones spinning at 7200 rpm in Raid 0, but I had to get a 15.4" lappie.

Yeah it's definitely nice to have the option. I'll tell you though, I'm definitely concerned with the battery life with dual drives spinning in there.
