    Thanks for your reply.

I've had a read through the Wi-fi thread. Looks like a decent upgrade and useful info as I'd been looking at the Intel 7260. Nasty what happened to your motherboard but we live and learn. The GPU upgrade was also interesting but I'm not there yet. The only thing I play is a bit of GTA mainly on my XBox One X so providing the laptop will do that at a decent resolution and frame rate then I'll be a happy bunny. Maybe a little Counterstrike Source for old times sake.

I'm hoping the chassis looks worse on the photos then it actually is. If not then it's going to need the bottom base and definitely a new lid but I'm not going to buy anything else until I can assess the damage. At a glance it looks like I'll need to get the parts from overseas as there doesn't seem to be that many floating around in the UK.

I'll do a bit more digging on the 4k panel. It's the mods to the lid housing that bother me a little depending on what they are.

I won't deny that I'm looking forward to getting it though. Consolidating 3 machines into one is a big plus for me. Not withstanding the additional performance from the extra cores and RAM. Plus it'll be a nice little side project to try and restore it back to its former glory.

There is no recommanded screen based on specs, they look all nearly the same.
    There is some of "know working" lcd : Innolux N173DSE-G31 (mine / 399.5mm large) , AUO B173ZAN01.0 (linked above / 398.1mm), Sharp LQ173D1JW31 (https://forum.51nb.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=1820565 / 393.7mm)
The thing you want to consider is getting a sharp display since they fit more easily between the "lcd bracket", my display (Innolux) is actually not screwed at all, it is just "compressed" by the two bracket of the old LVDS display (that are not screwed), it was very tricky to align the lcd correctly, that's why not even one of the backet is screwed :

120 Hz Samsung panel came in today. I gave it a go.

I could not get the system to boot with it. Just a blank screen. I tried twice, reseating the display cable. (Yeah, I'm sure I plugged it into the eDP port and not the LVDS one. And I had Optimus disabled.) So either my panel is bad, my cable is bad, or I just did something wrong. Anyway, I'm less excited about the panel after seeing it due to the "glossyness" of the screen. I forgot how much I don't like that. I guess that I am sticking with LG 1080p 60 Hz (until it is time to upgrade to a whole new laptop).

Probably will never know ... :p
I already reassembled the system and packed the LCD panel up to ship back. Not really motivated to mess with it anymore.
